I just emailed my friend who has a Romanian wife about the law putting you icon artists out of work. That's really terrible. Someone should change it.

this law can't be changed. it is an very good law. romania is one of few countrys who have old tradition in handicrafts.this law protect our traditional art (and artifacts)to "leave" the country. there are few iconists (painters or jewelers) who work nowdays in this domain and the state can't afford to lose the old arifacts for the good of few people. (example: in the past, romania did not support constantin brancusi. he went to france, study, worked and now all his art is in france).now to prevent that, they have taken measures...it is hard for artizans like me, but is good for our national patrimony.
p.s.:the real romania is not a bad place to be. only mass media and xenofobic people present this country in a bad light.but we don't care...

Interesting your response to the law. My friend who has experience in Romania through his wife's family has a very similar take to yours. . While not being able to export your art seems very strange from my perspective, I must bow to your understanding of the particulars. Brancusi is a great favorite of mine btw, I have studied his alabaster Sleeping Muse at the national gallery in DC many times.

well, this was in 2004-2005. at that time i was working for the romanian state mint as an "cizelor"(there is no enghlish word for this, it is something like: sculptor+jewel maker+engraver).now the pay for this craft is so low, that i choose to work as a security guard. in romania the "market" is full of cheap objects made by molding in italy and turkey.the romanian administration forced all the craftsmen to choose other jobs, by raising the taxes...

in romania the tradition of making icons (silver icons)is under the state supervising. you can make them, sell them, but only in romania.they become national patrimony. if you make them from copper or brass, the work is the same, but no one is willing to pay the money. it is a s%$T country to be an iconist...and i have the "disease" in the blood. i can't do something else...
