I was asked how I managed to get smooth skin... so here is the answer

Cool tutorial, been looking at a lot of blending tutorial, this is the first time I've seen this approach. I'm wondering is this the same technique you used to create blend the highlight on the cheek bone for your barmaid painting? I've looked a lot of blending tutorials and I still haven't figured out how that transition is being made

I find there are so many little methods to learn along the way, and tips to make workflow better-- which reminds me, one thing i didn't add to this tutorial was that I color pick by holding alt while in brush mode in photoshop-- it makes the process a million times faster. (alot of people didn't know the shortcut...)

I have Photoshop, but I mainly stick to SAI right now. Still have trouble with PS~ hopefully I'll get a bit better though.

The only problem I really have with it right now is switching brushes and finding the right brushes and stuff, and making it blend better. I keep trying to make custom brushes with different opacity settings and the like, but every time I try switching brushes, the settings are the same. It's a pain to reset. :/ Do you know how to fix it?

If you have a brush you modified that you like, open the brush palette in photoshop (windows>brushes). Make sure you are in the Brush Presets tab and hover your cursor in the space between the brush thumbnails and the scroll bar. your icon will change to a paint bucket. Click there and you'll create a new brush that will appear at the bottom of your brush set.
If you want to save that set, there's the option Save Brushes within the dropdown menu hiding in the top right of the Brushes window...
Hope that's what you meant and that it helps!
And yeah, blending is a painstaking process... Resist the airbrush, though! too smooth...

hm, well some of my brushes were given to me with the request that I not make them public... and mostly everything else I use is already in pshop

Geez, I'm going to sound like a terrible noob for this but I'm not sure I understand step three. I get that you use a mottled brush but how exactly do you "blend" something in to get that awesomely smooth finish in step four?

with a whole lot of constant color-picking (press alt while you're in brush mode), a very light touch (hence the pen pressure setting) and patience, really.
Download the full version, since I think there's more detail in that, and you'll see it's not perfect smoothness, mainly because I don't like super-smooth rendering...
But yeah, alot of people like to use an airbrush-y sort of brush to do the smoothing part of it, but I find, while it's easier to get it smooth, it looks fake. The mottled one is nice because it creates subtle variations that you actually see in skin.
