tl;dr: I learned a bunch of stuff.

H'ooookay. So. This is Valentine. Yes. Shocking, I know. The title so masterfully disguised who she was. i em genius. Moving on.

Not including the original sketch, I took something like 20 or so hours over four consecutive days to complete her. Well, semi complete. I say semi because there's still some things I wanna fix (and probably will when I feel like it) but, honestly, I was so tired of looking at her and... Anyway.

I tried out a BUNCH of new things that I learned from watching (and re-watching) various tutorials on youtube but one in particular reeeeeally helped me out and that was from a very talented artist named istebrak. She's here on DA. Look her up, she's amazing. (mostlybecauseidon'tknowhowtodothatfancylinkingthingpeopledoyetsobs)

I've watched color tutorials and realistic skin shading tutorials before but I never really came away with much of anything from them. Only one other tutorial came close but, honestly, the main thing I learned from that one was lighting, etc. I think with Istebrak's tutorial, I got it because she explained some of the science behind it, the components that went into it all. It was very in depth and very, very helpful. I highly recommend it.

So. In short (she says after writing a short novel) I used curves for the very first time, tried my best to apply the new shading and color methods I'd learned as well as layer effects. All that combined brings you this piece. Which, all in all, turned out pretty well. I think? I mean it's not awful but I have plenty of room for improvement.

I think it looks better now. Now she has flames to suit her magic and be gone polystyrene looking balls.
