Description
More progress on making spritesheets for my characters! I was in an animatey mood today but only managed to finish the base sprite for a new pose, and then I got distracted and made Jayus. Yay Jayus!Basically the idea I had was that Prince Roushal has different animations depending on whether he's in human mode (aka when he's awake) or spectre mode (he astral projects when he falls asleep)
So the happy standard sprite from last time is now his ghostly form, and we have a grumpy sleepy alternate one. Since, after all, he's incredibly ill. (Or "cursed", if you believe the superstition flying around...) And he's not exactly strong enough to try and hide it, or act all optimistic. He's kinda given up on stuff in general cos he's bored to tears and locked away all alone and spending all his time trying to figure out what "death" is and where people go when it happens. And why everyone's talking about it all of a sudden.
So he's kinda desperate for a little attention and freedom and distraction, and he goes completely hyperactive whenever his spirit friend Jayus comes to visit and he can pop out of his body to go fly off to the beach together, or something. Man, it'd be cool if he could do this every day and never wake up! For some reason Jayus gets sad when he says that...?
I kinda think I went too overboard with the sulky pose, he looks like... "I DESPISE ALL" XD
It took me a surprisingly long time to sprite that thing... aaaa. Scratch-spriting poses is THE hardest thing! Especially on chubby chibi kids with abnormally long noodle arms
I think maybe he carries a pillow around when he's awake. Cos he has his whole chronic fatigue thing, oversensitivity to hot and cold, general weakness, etc etc. He's gotten used to the fact that he'll faint if he overexerts himself, so he carries a pillow for a softer landing.
It's like *passes out* *drops pillow* *collapses* *lands expertly on top of it* *zzz*
He's been practising the technique for a while
I'm thinking that could be a gameplay element, perhaps...? Like, in the awake sections it's more like a resource management game. You can only do [x] amount of actions before you use up all your stress points, can you manage to make the right choices? And then like.. how well you do in this section = more preparation for the rpg dungeoncrawling at night when you go to the spirit world. Like, you can gain bonus stats by studying while awake, or you could buy items to help, or befriend party members, or gain status effects, or remove obstacles that'd otherwise show up.
And then Jayus sprite of adorable awkwardness! He doesn't have his freckle-eyes cos they were too small a detail to fit on the sprite without looking squashed and odd. And lol I dunno what I was even doing with his tail/abdominal segment. Over-shaded super silky fluff with sparkles~~
Someone's been stealing the palace's coconut shampoo again! XD
And then there's a random floating head of irrelevant nonsense cos I started doodling. Uhh... its some sort of ladybird person's face...?
Many thanks to beeZah who created this neat sulk walk reference that I'm using to build the animation~ And she also created the main Jayus design (though the child form was my idea)
So yeah later I'll make that cool walk animation, and also add clothes, duh XD Drawing fabric folds is hard so I always draw the body first and then put the clothes on top as if he was really wearing them, lol!

so you want it to look less miserable??
hmm~
maybe lift the eyelids a bit (maybe two pixels??) and bring the head back a pixel maybe?
also the arm is going, like, at an angle?? It might be one purpose to animate easier later but yeh just pointing stuffoutsorry
it looks really good so far, though!
I can't pixel worth shoop, lol
I tried just practicing once
it came out so awful
maybe later??

I dunno if I should make it look less miserable or not, instead it's more like.. he seems to look pissed off or sarcastic rather than upset?
And indeed the arm is different to your version for the purposes of animation. Alas! I know it looks weird but if it was completely stiff then it'd cover his right leg and that'd look awkward during the animation.
Like.. one pixel of leg poking out every now and again but otherwise you can't see that it's moving. So it'd look like he was hopping on one foot or something
So yeah umm.. does it look bad enough that I should try and figure out some way to change it? The only other solution I have is to make his arms suddenly become significantly shorter in this pose, but I think that'd be really noticeable..
Or if you meant the thing about his arm suddenly bending at a 90 degree angle at the bottom, that's supposed to be like.. metaphorical existance of a wrist. Since his arms are noodles and his hands are more noodles and he doesn't have any fingers. I was trying to do the same hand pose from your version except he has chibi hands so... odd
I'm sorry this is so bad
I'm glad you like it though!
I'll try and make it better...
And lol, spriting is like any other art- a few years of awfulness before you get remotely decent XD
You shoulda seen my first sprites XD But alas I was doing those before I joined devart and I don't have any of 'em anymore
