Oathkeeper Assassin — Description

An Oathkeeper of Azzandria. The Oathkeepers are a faction of Assassins and Lawyers. Their identity is hidden within multiple official law firms. Their stated purpose is to enforce Azzandrian social covenants by punishing those who break them with extrajudicial execution. Their philosophy is based on a combination of Azzandrian and Drengish political and religious scholarship. From this scholarship, they have developed the Parallel Laws, meant to bring justice when the Common Law falls short. They refer to a prospective execution as a Case. They are very selective about which Cases they accept. They will not accept a Case if: The Client has the means to pursue legal justice but has not attempted to do so, a social covenant has not been broken according to the Parallel Laws, the broken covenant is considered too small by the Parallel Laws to be worthy of death, the Client themself has also broken a covenant, or the Client does not agree to the Price. The Price is variable and depends on the Client's means. A wealthy Client will usually be charged money, while a poor client will almost always pay in the form of a favor. Usually, this means helping the Oathkeepers with a different case, usually in a small way. Part of the Oathkeepers’ philosophy is that their executions are meant to instill fear in order to deter future covenant breaches. Thus, for the execution of public figures whose breaches have harmed many, the Oathkeepers will make a gory display of their deaths in broad daylight, the assassin dressed in rich, macabre attire as a figure of death. The assassin will probably be caught, but their sentence will be short and comfortable, for the Oathkeepers are broadly liked, by rich and poor alike, for the cathartic social service they perform. They practice the Drengish law of Wergild, and will pay the innocent family of an executed person to make up for the financial harm of the death. Between Wergild and their selectiveness in Cases, the Oathkeepers is not very profitable. But this matters little, for most of its leadership are also lawyers in an official capacity, and have plenty of money to pay their assassins, and the highest even do the wet work themselves as a hobby. Thus, the Oathkeepers marry the judiciousness of the Azzandrians to the brutality of the Drengs.
