Well, Spongebob was one of the first Cartoons to go full stupid humor without having to rely on more mature concepts (like Ren and Stimpy did). With the full arsenal of cartoons we had back in the day, many of the became so bearable that we actually saw them as better than they might have been in today's day in age (where 2/3 of the things that play on cartoon channels are live action and 1/6 of them are horrible attempts at making good cartoons).

I wouldn't call SpongeBob exclusively Stupid Humor. It seems more care free and whimsical in its handling of things while just barely addressing mature concepts. When it does, its actually quite hilarious. There was a newer episode recently that full of visual gags that kept implying that Squidward was going to commit suicide. To my mind, that was hilariously dark given Squidward's character.

Though it does seem like cartoons nowadays are somewhat lacking in intelligence and are so incredibly fast paced that they rely upon sheer madness and randomness to maintain the humor quota.
