First thing's first- if you disagree with "traced bases" as a concept, this is NOT the tutorial for you. Please just hit the back button and go about your day.

Now, a disclaimer. If you plan to use a copyrighted image (such as the one in this tutorial), PLEASE make sure to either get permission from the original artist or at least CREDIT the source when you upload. If you're using an original sketch that you've drawn yourself, then you have nothing to worry about.

Note also that I use a very outdated version of GIMP, because I find the newest one completely inaccessible and unusable.

Other things to note:

- If you do plan to include options (hair, clothing, etc), you will want to duplicate that section of your original image off to the side before starting, that way you have it to line over without affecting the main base.

- Have your color palette open in another window or on a separate layer for easy access/ color swapping.

Please note that I very much advocate for learning to draw on your own, without relying on tracing.
However, I also believe that tracing a base body (not the clothes, hair, or other defining features) CAN help with learning anatomy and where things usually go on a humanoid body. There are myriad tutorials out there about proportions and anatomy, so please go look them up if you're having trouble.
