Inspired by the newest video by Thorgi's Arcade on YouTube - check it out! (Don't worry, while the similarities are obvious, it's not a complete copy-paste.)
All characters are owned by their respective companies and creators.
Well, here we are! Late to the bandwagon, admittedly, but I finally made my own hypothetical Marvel vs. Capcom 4 roster! Took me long enough honestly, I don't know why I didn't bother getting it off the checklist until now. That being said, I'll be covering the returning characters first and then the new ones... expect some tough cuts on the returning representatives, because I only brought back 12 from each.
Returning Characters
Marvel Side:
Starting off, Spider-Man - pretty obvious choice, since he's practically the face of Marvel Comics... who are currently doing everything in their power to prevent him from giving him one darn break.
Next up are Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange. More fairly obvious additions since they're pretty well known even outside of the comics. Heck, the Marvel Cinematic Universe spawned from one Iron Man movie. Still shocking that that whole thing is almost over...
Then we have the X-Men characters. I put Wolverine and Rogue to fill the protagonistic X-Men slots, but maybe we can take a page out of Android 18's playbook from Dragon Ball FighterZ and have Rouge's quarter-circle back special move call in Gambit. (Also, Rogue would have her copy ability super from X-Men vs. Street Fighter as her Level 3. Just thought I'd clear that up.) For the more antagonistic X-Men characters, I'm going with Spiral, Magneto and Deadpool. Magneto and Deadpool need no explanation, they are crazy popular, and people tore Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite a new one when they saw Magneto absent. But as for Spiral, I brought her back because the VS. series made her popular, and the only game she returned in was Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (though she was planned to return in MvC3, she ultimately got scrapped because of programming issues - had to do with her four metal arms). So I say we rectify that.
And finally, the last two returning Marvel characters — starting with Doctor Doom. You have to include Doctor Doom - he is one of the most important characters in Marvel Comics and the MCU is ending with him. Lastly, Venom - you need that '90s nostalgia, and Venom has it in spades. We are NOT reserving him for DLC this time.
Capcom Side:
Now onto the Capcom Side, let’s start with the three most obvious choices, Ryu, Chun-Li and Sakura Kasugano. Ryu and Chun-Li are Mr. and Mrs. Fighting Game, so of course they have to be in here. As for Sakura… listen, she’s the most popular Street Fighter character of all time. And that’s not an exaggeration - Capcom held two character popularity polls for the Street Fighter franchise — one in 2017 and one last year. Sakura took first place in BOTH OF THEM. Yeah, you kinda have to include her in a crossover fighting game. I don’t know why she hasn’t been in the Versus series since MvC2.
As for the Monster Hunter, let’s bring the character back for this game, but this time, since the first Monster Hunter Stories game hit the Nintendo Switch just last year, why not play as the Rider for a change? His play style would be similar to how Jill played in MvC2 — relying on his weapons while also having attacks that can summon Monsties. And we HAVE to give him Ratha for his Level 3.
Next on the list we have Wesker, a famous Resident Evil villain who has played a vital role throughout the franchise’s history ever since the first game. Yeah, we’re bringing him back.
Next, we have the Mega Man who never was, Zero. And we’re giving him a complete overhaul. First the design - because I’m biased, it’s the Zero series design. We need more of that Zero in fighting games. Now for gameplay. While the move set would remain mostly the same (just swap out the X series techniques for Zero series ones), there’d be a bar above his Super Meter that increases as he deals damage. If this meter is filled all the way in a certain manner, Zero gets a different form for the rest of the match. Grounded Z-Saber attacks give you the Active Form, Buster Shot attacks give you the X Form, Z-Knuckle attacks give you the Power Form, and aerial Z-Saber attacks the Rise Form. These four forms both help and hinder Zero in different ways by altering his play style - Active Form makes him a glass cannon by removing charge attacks on weapons that are not the Z-Knuckle, X Form makes him a long-distance zoner by improving the Buster Shot’s damage and projectile output but limiting the Z-Saber to only one slash, Power Form makes him a tank a la Juggernaut by increasing his damage output while sacrificing speed, and Rise Form makes him a close-range rush down by increasing the speed of all Z-Saber attacks while only increasing the damage of aerial Saber attacks. That way, not only will Zero be easy and fun to play as, but he’ll also be fair and balanced, as well as have variety in each match which can make him fun to play against. Wow. That was a lot to cover…
Onto the Darkstalkers characters, we have Morrigan, Hsein-Ko and Lilith. It sucks how the Darkstalkers cast was treated in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. Really, the only other character from that series in that game was JEDAH, and the developers had to fight to get him in from what I heard. So yeah, we’re rectifying that.
Lastly, we need some Capcom characters that modern-day fans know, so just stick Dante, Frank West, and Phoenix Wright in there. All of them are pretty popular, and it’d feel wrong to leave them out. Plus, let’s update Dante’s design to match his DMC5 appearance and give him his weapons from that game.
New Characters
Now for the 24 new characters. For this one, I’ll be going over the Capcom side first before covering the Marvel half, since I did it the other way around for the returning characters.
Capcom Side:
Leon S. Kennedy — Would play like a mix of MvC2 Jill and DBFZ Android 18; the herbs Ashley brings out can either heal some of Leon’s health, increase his stats, or heal half his current health, but if she takes enough damage before she can give Leon an herb, she can no longer be brought in.
Nero — he’d play similar to Dante, but his special moves revolve around his various Devil Breaker arms instead of Dante’s various weapons.
Juri — she’d play similar to how he does in Street Fighter 6, but she also gets stat buffs and the ability to wall cling with her install super.
Mai Ling — The only Red Earth character not to be featured in a crossover fighting game. She plays like she does in Red Earth, with Mystic Force serving as her Level 3 and both Super Kuujin Ken and Super Enryuu Kyaku serving as her Level 1s.
Mega Man — The one Mega Man that has never graced a fighting game of any sort... and yes, I am including MegaMan.EXE's presence in Onimusha Blade Warriors - the game was a platform fighter, and those are still considered to be fighting games. Mega Man's quarter circle forward attack would be the Cannon for a light attack, the Plasma Gun for a medium attack, and the Radar Missile for the heavy attack. His dash attacks would be the appropriately named Jet Attacks, his Z input would be the Stun, Poison and Freeze Knuckles (depending on the attack strength inputted), and the half circle backward input has him lob Heat Balls. For his Level 1 Supers, Mega Man can summon Gemini Spark and Queen Ophiuca to attack the opponent, and the Mega Card used depends on the attack strength (Normal for Light, EX for Medium, and SP for Heavy). For the Level 3, Mega Man can use one of the three Satellite Admin Giga Cards in order to use his Star Force transformation, which behaves as an Install Super. Ice Pegasus changes the quarter circle forward attack and the Level 3 to Ice Slash and Star Force Big Bang: Magician's Freeze, Fire Leo changes the quarter circle forward attack and the Level 3 to Flame Burner and Star Force Big Bang: Atomic Blazer, and Green Dragon changes the quarter circle forward attack and the Level 3 to Woody Shot and Star Force Big Bang: Elemental Cyclone.
Harp Note — While we're at it, why not throw in two Star Force characters for the price of one? Among her Sword, Blazing Edge and Break Sabre battle cards being used for her dash attack, Harp Note would have her Shock Note speakers as a grounded quarter circle forward attack and Machine Gun String as a mid-air quarter circle forward attack. She also has Pulse Song, an attack that has to be blocked lest her opponent is willing to be inflicted with a status detriment because it's an armor piercing move, and she can even use her Frequency Change ability to teleport behind opponents for surprise attacks (forgot to mention - Mega Man can also do this. The command for both would be hold crouch, jump, and then attack button - how far you go depends on the strength of the attack button inputted). For Harp Note's Level 1 Supers, she can bring Cancer Bubble and Cygnus Wing to the field to attack, and, like Mega Man's Level 1 Supers, the Mega Card used depends on the attack strength (Normal for Light, EX for Medium, and SP for Heavy). Her Level 3 Install Super would be Lyra taking control over her, much like what happens in the anime and games. As a result, the strength of Harp Note's attacks would increase, as would her speed. However, as a drawback, Harp Note’s defense would decrease drastically.
Manon — She'd play just like she would in Street Fighter 6, though maybe remove the medal system and have her command grab and hit grab temporarily increase her stats. We don't want her being too broken... I say that knowing the Versus series is FLOODED with broken characters.
Akira — Here, she'd play like a mix of how she does in Project Justice and Street Fighter V.
Regina — Thankfully, this is the last character on the Capcom side who'd play like MvC2 Jill, only instead of summoning zombies, she's summoning dinosaurs. And yes, the T-Rex would be her Level 3.
Apollo Justice — While similar to Phoenix on paper, you can do a lot with Apollo to differentiate him from his mentor. Swap Maya Fey with Trucy Wright or Athena Cykes, give Apollo his own evidence meter so that it doesn't overlap with Phoenix's, and make his Chords of Steel workout an attack, among other things.
Ingrid — I think she'll play like how she will in Street Fighter 6. I know, she isn't in Street Fighter 6 yet and was only recently announced, but I can't help myself.
Neo Sigma — I know, Sigma appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, but that was X1 Sigma. And Neo Sigma plays completely different from X1 Sigma. 5 Bullet Shot would of course be the Level 1 Super, Electromagnetic Wave for the Level 3, and Claw Attack and Aerial Claw Attack will of course be Special Moves. But for the rest, we'd have to get original.
Marvel Side:
Daredevil — One of the Marvel characters no one fan is against being in the Versus series. His particular set of skills could make for an interesting move set, especially since we don't have much variety in weapon users in the Versus series.
Captain America (Sam Wilson) — Sure, Steve Rogers has the history of this series and we can always bring him over as free DLC. But Sam Wilson was MADE for the Versus series. Plus, we can also put in Steve Rogers as free DLC if people start losing interest.
Darkhawk — One of Spider-Man’s allies who rose up in popularity a few years ago thanks to a successful comic book run and some mobile games; I figured I’d give him a shot on the roster for this hypothetical MvC4.
Black Cat — We need more Spider-Man antagonists on the Versus series lineup, and since Black Cat has also been rising in popularity, why not go with her? She’d be a more bait-and-run type character to contrast with Spidey and Venom being zoners, with special and super moves that revolve around her occupation and bad luck powers.
Blade — The other Marvel character no one fan is against being in a Marvel vs. Capcom game, especially since he has a lot of weapons at his disposal that would make for great special moves and Level 1 Supers. Like Harp Note, his Level 3 would be an Install Super that would increase his attack and speed to make him more of a threat, but lower defense as a drawback to compensate.
Emma Frost — A fifth X-Men character definitely sounds like I’m stretching things too far, especially with the three returning Street Fighter characters and three new ones (technically four, if you count Akira), but like Black Cat, Emma Frost has boomed in popularity over the past two decades. A stance play style like the one described in Thorgi’s video would definitely match her power set.
Sue Storm/Malice — Sue could act like a support character, using her invisible barriers as armor for herself and - for her Level 3 - her teammates as well. She could also use her invisibility as a teleport, the length of which would vary depending on the strength of the attack button. However, if Sue is KO’d with her Super meter completely full (Level 5), she becomes Malice, who’d play similar to HFTF Dio, with the difference that Malice’s Level 3 would be an storm of Invisi-Blades from the sky, and her Level 1s being her invisible morning star and a move similar to Frieza’s Death Psycho Bomb where she uses a force field on the opponent to cause an explosion.
The Maker — I am including Reed Richards… but NOT Mr. Fantastic. Yep, we’re including The Maker instead, the Reed Richard’s of Earth-1610. Don’t worry, Mr. Fantastic can be an alternate costume with unique lines.
Crimson Dynamo — Much like with Spidey, we need some more Iron Man villains/antagonists in the Versus series line-up, so why not go for one of his more well known ones? I wanted to go for Detroit Steel because I felt that getting him down to Hulk size could work, but I felt that this was a better pick.
Gwenpool — Another opportunity Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite wasted was including Gwenpool during the 2 year run of The Unbelievable Gwenpool comics. Then again, it was 2017… the time when Marvel was obsessed with the MCU when it was still on everyone’s mind. I feel like she’d be a puppet fighter, with either Cecil or Jeff being at her side for the match.
Jessica Jones — I had to include Marvel’s very own counterpart to Sherlock Holmes (and no, I do not mean Sherlock Holmes from the Marvel Ideaverse), especially because her Netflix series was a HUGE HIT. Jessica Jones has a power kit that would fit perfectly in the Versus series, so it’d be a waste not to include her in here… unless your name is Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
Loki — Simple, have him play similarly to Super Baby 2 in Dragon Ball FighterZ - if Loki defeats an opponent's character, he can summon them as an assist.
Yeah, this was the other info dump I mentioned on my last deviation. Believe me, it was not easy trying to figure out how some of these characters would work, but I managed it as best as I could...
I'll update this later to include the free and paid DLC characters for this hypothetical roster, but for now, I just worked on getting the base roster settled. Hope you like it!
