To him, [First] was perfect. The way her [h/c] hair flowed around her when she trained with her squad, the way her [e/c] eyes sparkled with passion when she spoke about the freedom of humanity… most of all the way she smiled. She was a strong leaders and a loyal solider. Mike was positive that there was nothing that woman wouldn’t do for her comrades. Yes to Mike Zacharius, [First] [Last] was absolutely perfect. Except for one tiny flaw, her smell.
If he caught her in the morning, right when she woke up and had showered, the [h/c] haired woman smelt like the juiciest of strawberries. It was intoxicating to the point of rendering the blonde male speechless. However, that was only if he caught her in the morning. If he saw her in the middle of the day, she would reek of him.
That rude, over-confident, short Corporal.
Mike wasn’t sure what [First] saw in that man, but they were always together. They trained their squads together, sat together during meals, and even did paper work together. The only time [First] wasn’t with the Corporal was when she was helping Hanji out with her two titans. It was Hanji who had realized Mike’s feeling before he himself had. She noticed the way the blonde would frown when he saw the other two squad leaders together, and the way he would glare at them over meals. Hanji also was the first to notice when Mike would get up earlier just to ‘run into’ [First] before breakfast.
Yes, Mike was jealous of Levi. He laughed at the brunette woman at first, why would he be jealous of that shorty? But after seemingly endless prodding, Mike finally admitted to having a tiny crush on their [e/c] eyed comrade. The more he thought about it, the more the statement rang true in his mind. He was jealous of Levi. [First] was too perfect for the grouchy man. He didn’t deserve her bright smiles or her heartwarming laugh.
It wasn’t fair!
The bespectacled woman had reassured Mike time and time again that Levi and [First] were just friends. While she was close to the other woman, Mike couldn’t let himself give into such hope. After all, they were always together. And she always smelt like him. The other man’s scent was enough to make the blonde gag. It wasn’t necessarily a bad smell, it was just that it was all over something he wanted. Someone he wanted.
As time went on Mike grew accustom to his situation. [First] would never be his. All he could do was cherish those few moments in the early sunlight when his nostrils were filled with the sweet aroma of fresh strawberries.
Life wasn’t fair, and he would have to live with it. Oh so he thought…
It was late in the evening, minutes before curfew, and Mike was walking back from his office. He a taken a small detour, wanting to enjoy the warm summer night for a few moments longer. His journey took him passed the bath house and he was surprised to find [First] exiting the building. He smelt her before he registered her shadowy figure moving into the courtyard. He had taken a large intake of breathe, wanting to relish the crisp smell of the night, when his nose was assaulted with a wave of a luscious strawberry scent.
Her name instantly rang out in his mind.
Dark eyes darting around, looking for the woman. He saw her emerge from the shadow cast on the bath house’s entrance.
“Mike!” her voice called to him in a cheery tone. “What a pleasant surprise!”
As she moved to stand before him, her scent became even more powerful. He blinked owlishly at her, his brain too intoxicated by her to think of a response. A worried look crossed her soft face and a warm hand was placed on his arm.
“Hey? Are you feeling alright?”
Mike managed a small nod. She seemed unconvinced by his response but never the less she laced her arm with his and began to pull him down the path to the dorms. The blonde man thanked his lucky stars as a cool summer breeze fanned over them, diluting her delicious scent to a more manageable level.
“I never see you at this time” [First] mused, trying to strike up a conversation. “Getting swamped with paperwork?”
Mike shrugged, “not really. I decided to take a bit of a stroll before bed. Just happened to be passing by the bath house.”
The [h/c] haired woman nodded. Jokingly she added, “No one said being a Squad Leader meant tons of paper work! I might have told the Commander ‘no’ if I had known.”
The blonde couldn’t help but smile at the joyful look on his companions face. God, she’s pretty. But just as his mood brightened, it soon turned dark. [First] began to ramble on about her day, which Mike wouldn’t have minded, except almost every story had to do Levi. Levi this and Levi that… ugh the blonde wanted to puke. Truth be told, the woman wasn’t really talking about specially Levi, the short Corporal just happened to be around or involved in most of her day’s events.
Because they’re always together Mike grumbled to himself.
Suddenly a hand waved slowly in front of his face.
“Hellooooo?” the woman laughed. “Anybody home?”
“Hmm?”
“I asked what your opinion was of the finding Hanji was explaining over dinner” she explained.
Dinner? He didn’t remember Hanji saying anything over dinner. All he could remember was watching [First] try to make Levi laugh at her joke, then Levi whispering something in her ear that made her blush. Mike’s fist curled into fist at the memory.
“Why does what I think matter?” the male mumbled. He completely missed the way the woman flinched at his now angry tone. “I’m sure your dear Levi’s opinion matters more than mine ever would.” Mike couldn’t help but spit out the name in disgust. It just wasn’t fair.
Thin eyebrows narrowed in confusion. The shorter woman stepped in front of him and placed a hand on his chest to stop him. “My Levi? Mike, what on Earth are you talking about?”
The blonde scoffed. “Don’t play dumb, [First], your relationship with the Corporal is pretty clear.”
As Mike glared at the ground, he was surprised to hear a soft giggle come from beside him. The sound grew in volume until it was a rather loud laugh that rang out in the quiet night. After a few moments the young woman seemed to compose herself.
“Oh Mike, you’re too funny. Levi and I?” she began to laugh again. “Just the thought is killing me! Oh my god, I have to tell him this tomorrow.”
Mike was confused. His perplexed expression must have shown on his face because [First] soon stopped laughing and looked at him with a face of realization.
“Wait, you’re being serious? You honestly think that the Corporal and I have a… thing?”
“W-well,” the male stuttered out, now feeling slightly foolishly. Had Hanji been right all along? “You guys are always together, I just thought… Plus, he was making you blush at dinner tonight so naturally I assumed-“
His ramblings were cut off by a gently finger being pressed against his lips. Mike wasn’t sure when his eyes had drifted to the ground, but he lifted his gaze slowly. He was surprised to be met with a brightly blushing [First].
“…”
Mike couldn’t make out the woman’s words. She noticed his blank expression and blushed even more.
“We were talking about you” she whispered, more audibly then before.
“Me?” Now he truly was confused.
[First] let out a sigh, realizing she would have to explain more than she wanted to. “I was trying to tell Levi a joke, but he wasn’t paying attention. When he leaned over… it was to tell me that you had been staring at me since dinner started.”
Now it was Mike’s turn to blush. He didn’t realize that anyone other than Hanji took notice of his attention towards [First]. “O-oh… I’m sorry, it’s just…”
Mike wasn’t sure what to say. Should he just tell her how he felt? That he’d been harboring a huge crush on the [e/c] eyed girl? While he battled with himself, he missed the look of uneasiness that passed over the girl’s face before it settled into one of determination. So he was surprised when two dainty hands grabbed his collar and pulled him down to her level. Warm lips were pressed against his, and Mike’s eyes widened for a moment before he relaxed into the kiss. He allowed one of his hands to slide around [First]’s waist, holding her against him, while the other curled around her head.
After a few moments the couple broke apart.
“Levi has always been a friend” she whispered, a small smile pulling on her lips. “You were the only person I ever wanted to be with. I just thought you didn’t like me, you always seemed to avoid me.”
Mike began to feel guilty for all the times he avoided her. It hadn’t been anything she’d done, it was him being stupid. “I’m sorry” Mike apologized. “It’s just, I had these feelings… and you always smelt like him and I just couldn’t take it!”
“I smell?!” [First] tried to pull away, clearly embarrassed about the fact she had an apparent odor problem.
“No!” The blonde pulled her back into his arms. “No, no, no! You don’t smell bad, you smell wonderful actually. To the point that I find it hard to think around you sometimes…” Mike noticed the pink tint cross the woman’s cheeks and realized what he had said. Blushing himself, he continued “What I meant was that, when you’d spend all day around Levi I could smell him on you. And it made me…”
He couldn’t bring himself to finish his sentence. He felt like a little kid. He couldn’t admit to the girl of his dreams that he avoided her because he was jealous she smelt like another man.
Unfortunately for him, [First] could finish the thought on her own. “You were jealous? Of Levi?”
The male pouted and looked away, only for [First] to pull his face towards her and plant a soft kiss on his lips.
“That’s adorable” she chuckled. She hadn’t removed her hands from his cheeks, letting her thumbs caress his skin. “Have breakfast with me tomorrow?”
Mike couldn’t help but smile at the innocent look in her eyes as she stared up at him hopefully. “I’d love to. Allow me to walk you to your room?”
She nodded happily.
Slipping his hand around hers, the pair walked in a comfortable silence to the dorms. Once they arrived, Mike left [First] with a gentle kiss goodnight before departing to his own room. Both soldiers dreamt of the other, delighted that their feelings were reciprocated and the possibility to explore their new relationships.
Maybe life wasn’t so unfair after all.
