Shogi — Description

After that less than exciting new character reveal for Super Smash Bros. (not a fan, definitely not a fan, but probably not for the most common reasons), I decided it was time to upload some blocky art of my own.

Now what is this? This is a Shōgi board. Shōgi is a very old board game, still played to this day of course, that hails from Japan. It is similar in some ways to Chess (which is why it's often called Japanese Chess), but I feel it's more like a war, a game of generals. Two sides face off against one another and the object of the game is to get a checkmate with the opposing king. Unlike Chess however, you're allowed to place captured enemy pieces back onto the board. War prisoners being forced to fight for the enemy~!

Why did I decide to make this? Two reasons. The first reason is that I wanted to make something neat that might be added to Coloring Pixels, a fun paint-by-numbers game I like to play. I already had a piece in before and was hoping it could happen again ^^

The second reason, and the reason why it is a Shōgi board of all things, is because I wanted to make something related to a fun anime I was watching, called March Comes in Like a Lion (or Sangetsu no Raion in Japanese). But since the characters in that show are pretty generic in terms of looks, I figured a Shōgi board would be more interesting~!

All characters on the Shōgi pieces are as accurate as I could get them on such small pieces, although I had to go for the simplified designs. The board itself was made to resemble a wooden surface and I think that came out pretty well~! Now.. wish me luck for Coloring Pixels, please~!
