The story here is set directly after Arkham Knight's Knightfall Protocol ending is that Batman is given a chance by an unknown entity to start over in Equestria, he is sent there along with his butler Alfred as well as some necessary credentials and equipment to resume his secret identity and start anew. In his first year there, crime is rare to find and the Batmane is considered to be an myth or a scary nightmare night story with not many ponies believing he exists while those few that do or have seen him believe him to be many things. A guardian, a hero, a demon, a vigilante, an emissary of Nightmare Moon, many things. Celestia herself is cautious about Batmane,
One night while out on patrol, he hears a scream of painful loss and sad anguish, something he once felt on the night his parents were shot. Rushing to the scene, his sees a trio of hooded ponies (part of a cult that worships Nightmare Moon who gather potential recruits by any means necessary and await her return) moving closer to Twilight who is only a young filly at the time. Beside her, her mom and dad are laying on the ground dead after they refused to give their daughter away and so were killed for their act of defiance. In a fit of anger and rage after the scene brings back painful memories, Batmane rushes and brutally beats up the hooded ponies. Twilight is scared of him at first but eventually breaks down and clings on to him for comfort after Bruce opens up to her, telling her that he knows how she's feeling. Fearing that Twilight is no longer safe now that she's a target of the cult (and with her brother away for royal guard training and would not be able to financially support her by himself), Bruce decides to take her in (along with hatchling Spike) to keep her safe after talking to Celestia through his Bruce Wayne persona.
