Description
When the waves pull back from the shore, the shore knows they will return
and when the moon hides her face,
the skies know she will return.
If only I were the lakeshore or a blue sky,
I would have some assurances, wouldn't I --
that you would return and all would be well,
like birds returning in spring.
Even after the wide world freezes over,
crocuses return to the gardens,
undaunted by the deepest frost.
You are neither wave nor moon, nor bird or bloom
and I was never a patient thing, but I shall wait
until my heart runs dry for you to return to me.
