Thanks for the watch.

Hey, I'm thinking over college majors and was wondering what you could tell me about interior designing and architecture. :-D Any major stuff I should be aware of if picking those majors?

The biggest thing to understand about interior design specifically is the difference between design and decorating (which has become very confused due to popular culture and television shows); Although many individuals call themselves designers, and some college programs are called interior design, many of them should actually be referring to it as decorating. Since you are interested in architecture I'm guessing you are probably aware of the difference already, but just in case you aren't, the simplest way to describe what a legitimate designer who has graduated from a CIDA approved program does is 'interior architecture'. Although architects often do both the interior and exterior of a building, their real specialty/knowledge base is in the exterior/shell of the building. The interior designer should be doing the interior architecture (ie. floor plans, elevations, overall volumetric of the space). A certified designer can also do the exterior/shell of the building up to a size of 6000 square feet and three stories. Both a designer and an architect must have the structural shell approved by an engineer, however, regardless of the size. A designer's job does include decorating, which is a lot of fun because you are decorating a space that was entirely your design (whereas a decorator is decorating existing walls and conditions). The decorating part is really only about one percent of the job though...most of your time is spent drawing up contract documents for your design (ie. construction drawings, or what used to be blueprints). Design school is a lot of fun, but also pretty stressful. It is a studio based education, which is a lot more intense than academically based programs. There are a lot of hours that need to be put in (from Sunday until today (thursday) I've put in about 40 hours of my own time on top of studio and class time). I'm assuming architecture would be pretty similar. You have to really enjoy what you are doing or else it's just hell lol. I'm not sure what country you are located in, but I'm in Canada, so if you are anywhere else some of the certification may be different. I think the U.S. may also be governed by CIDA though (maybe).

I hope this helps...I had to learn a lot of this on my own so I'm happy to pass on anything that you might need!
