Hey Althea! I'm Emily from the workshop yesterday! I had a great time drawing some awesome manga, and I hope you did as well
I've forgotten to ask you yesterday, but I've got a wacom bamboo pen graphics tablet, and its kind of annoying because its really different from drawing with pen and pencil, and just controlling it in general. Do you have any tips on using the tablet?

Great to hear from you! 
I know what you mean about the graphics tablet, it is very different from using pencil to paper and everyone I know who works with it has had a lot of trouble adjusting to it at first. It really comes with practice from using it a lot. It's definitely a step up from from using a mouse but it is tricky to get your head around the hand-eye co-ordination thing. Eventually you do get to a point where you're comfortable with it.
I'm not sure exactly what the differences with a bamboo and an intuous is... perhaps Fiona might be able to shed some light in this area since she's had experience with both.
The only thing I could mention is just to make sure you have a driver installed then play around with the settings (calibrating) like adjusting the pressure settings and any shortcuts you might want to program to make your workflow faster.

This might be something you've already done though... but it's something I only learned in uni so I mentioned it just incase. ^_^

Hey! Good to hear from you! I see you've been keeping busy. That's really great! You're improving so much! How did you go with your HSC?
I haven't actually worked for a while. Been a bit slack about looking for a job because I'm actually off to Melbourne for a week holiday next week. >_< I did however send in a portfolio to one studio today. So hopefully when I get back, I'll have a bit of momentum built up to start contacting other studios.

oooo interesting~ well cant say that animation is an easy job anywys i guess a holiday is a must. Do you really have to go to different studios? I mean dun you stay in one studio?

It's starting to become common now-a-days with this sort of profession that you tend to hop around different studios. It's actually more ideal, especially when you're younger since that's the best way to make a lot of contacts so that further down the track, it's easier to get through jobs via people you know.
For film, you're usually hired for a period of a few months to a year... then you get reviewed and if you're good and they still need you, then your contract gets renewed - unless of course you want to move on to a new job. For TV, you're usually hired till the end of the season. If there's more work or a new project that they think they can put your skills to use, then they ask you to stay longer. I'm not too sure about commercial ads since they have a much faster turn over - I think it's half and half. Some people get asked to stay permanently, whilst others are employed for a few weeks to do their job as the company needs it.
