Well, we were under Japanese rule for 2 years where we were renamed Syonan-To. The two years were hard but when the war ended, Lord Mountbatten, the representative for the British came down to Singapore to sign the surrender agreement with the Japanese, taking back Singapore. Japanese prisoners-of-war were forced to fix gas and water pipes, roads and buildings that were destroyed during the war.
However, Singaporeans were unhappy and angry with the British for their inability to protect them during WWII and thus they rebelled. Eventually, after months of protests, Singapore was awarded Internal self-government. Eventually, with the success of the Merdeka talks after many years, Singapore became fully independent and decided to join with Malaysia.
