I know what you mean. My four cockatiels are such dear friends to me. Just last night I was playing the "tapping game" with them. Cockatiels (especially males) rap their beaks on objects loudly to "claim their territory." I evolved this into a game with my first `tiel, Spazz. He knocks on a perch, and I answer back by vigorously tapping on something else. This game can range from a quick communication exchange to several minutes complete with dancing, singing, and being silly. Last night, two recently aquired untamed rescues (Pipsi and Tiptup) initiated the game with me, and it lasted for quite a while. I know `tiels love this, but I'm not sure if lovebirds or any other birds are really know for this...
This morning, Spazz joined me in the shower in his shower perch, and we played "dentist." I opened my mouth, and he peered in and started chattering as if to say: "hmm, that's interesting. We'll have to operate." He promptly tapped his beak on one of my teeth, pulled back, and continued chattering. Within the last month, I've added three rescued birds to my flock, taking it from just Spazz and I, to four chattery birds. The three additions are not tame, but it is positively uplifting to see how more and more they crave attention. They hang out on the side of their cage nearest me, watching adoringly and chittering for a response.
It is so difficult to capture a bird's charming personality on film, but I'm working on it. Look forward to some pictures of my fids in the near future.

Awww how adorable! I've got 4 lovebirds...one turned out to be a girl and just started laying eggs out of no where after a good 10 years. And I potty trained them in less than a day by merely praising them. They're also learning flight commands. You never know what to expect from such intelligent creatures. My birds all sort of do that tapping thing from time to time as well. I wasn't aware of that
Although we do a similar game when it comes to certain calls. They have that 'where are you?' chirp and we just call back to one another to reassure them I'm around and I'll be there soon.
Later on when I'm older, I'd love to adopt some rescue birds, as well as own an african grey, conure or even a macaw. I can't get enough of these little creatures. They're so intelligent and each one has such a personality...not to mention they're so sensative when it comes to their 'flock'.
The "dentist" game sounds interesting. I think my birds wouldn't like the idea of sticking their head in my mouth though They do like giving kisses but I'm always making sure they don't wrestle their beaks in and catch some of my saliva (as I've read it's not good for them...)
I'm trying to get these guys used to the camera so I can catch some of their antics. But it's not an easy thing to do. Perhaps try introducing it to them some like you would a new toy (if you even do that) Otherwise, they'll eventually learn and start showing off Can't wait to see some of your photos.

My Spazz is a camera ham. The rest don't appear afraid, but I'm not pushing them. I'd like to breed my two pairs of cockatiels, and then when I'm an adult I'd like to breed African greys (after I've accumulated some much-needed experience). I'd like to take a stab at weeding out that nervousness that so many grey owners talk about by intensive socialization at a young age. I'm planning on being a small breeder, with only one or two pairs. All the babies would be raised a pets, getting them used to normal, crazy human life. Also, I want to keep one of the grey babies I raised and socialized myself, and see how far I can get with documenting intelligence. I follow Irene Pepperberg's research with Alex closely, but I'd like to approach it from a different angle - I'd teach them like a small child. I want to see if I can teach a grey to read.
But all that is for many, many years down the road. Right now, I just love my little parrots to pieces. Very few people understand my devotion to them, but I'm sure you do. Do you have pictures of all your babies?
