Let's face it, the default deviantart layout is ugly (I don't like how it's split into two halves vertically, no other site does that and dividing our "main" space into two looks bad to me?)

I agree, profiles look so bad ugh.
What I really hate abt DA is the ugly greenish grey they use. I think it's just an ugly color to look at :S
Which is why I like customizable profiles, bc I can at least cover part of the grey up with pretty backgrounds lol

Yea!! I wish I could change at least the color of the general bg of my page smh.
From what I've seen, they're gonna change their header and general color to a dark grey/black, which would look SO MUCH BETTER TBH.
I agree tho, the green in the grey is what ruins it for me. It's just an overall ugly color. So I'm crossing my fingers we get some sort of update soon :\

I haven't followed what the staff do until recently but I hope this change comes soon...
I don't have a lot of hope for updates because they keep adding/tweaking things I don't even use (I wasn't here for when they added llamas, but that is so unimportant and literally worthless). I know things like updating a site as large as this takes time, but fffs. Idek.

It's nice to know that someone else feels the same about the green-grey colour too :/ it's okay, but it just doesn't go with a lot of schemes people use when making their page pretty, so it ends up looking bad and it's not their fault.
It's like DA got greener when they rebranded, if they made the 'base' white/black it would look nicer and not clash with people's pages.
How did you feel about that time the staff made a big journal about the "art theft =/= actual stealing"??

I honestly don't follow the staff, I just check up on what DA is doing every once and a while. I don't like following the staff bc I don't wanna get a ton of dumb bs in my inbox

I've been on DA for like 8 years at this point, and I"m honestly so apathetic about what they do now LMAO. Like they make a dumb change and the extent of my reaction is "we're all dying anyways :\"
(altho core did piss me off bc of the price change. Now I can't afford a membership )
LLAMAS WERE SO STUPID TBH.  I honestly don't like it when websites have some sort of badge feature, I think it's worthless. I'm soo happy we;re able to turn off notifs for llamas.

There's add-ons you can use to change the color of DA, and tbh I've been thinking of downloading one of those just so I feel like my page looks okay lol
They did change it to be more green actually! I used to make pixels on MSpaint and I couldn't export them w transparent BGs, so I would just make the bg color the same as DAs. I was looking at one of those recently and the grey there was much more neutral and nice. I still don't like light greys but I would've preferred that one.

tbh I read like a portion of that journal and then just.... closed it bc it was getting me too heated.

That's so sad to hear, and lol 8 years is a long time putting up with service like this (I do like to hear what it's like with dA changing over so long).
I didn't even know you could do that with llamas, I might do that (I don't like the thank you's so I don't give any - right above the comments on my page it says in HUGE AND BOLD: "don't thank me" but people still do it anyway? Can they not see it? We both type English so they can definitely understand it |:\)

Yeah, I think badge systems are like... there's quite a jargon-y phrase for it: vanity currency? Vanity system? Pretty much worthless, but somehow a 'tangible' form of idk, popularity. And it's llamas, I'm pretty sure DA was trying to be "down and KOOL WITH DA KIDZ" because haha, llamas are a MEME and MEMES ARE FUNNY. LAUGH, as we want you to pay REAL CASH for some tiny pixels that look rather phallic!!!

I'm just one person but if I had any say in this site, they could at least make it less green because ??? who thought of this, people's art are going to be on here, in colours that might like crap with green.

That journal nearly made me ditch my account (and one of my friends actually did), but I'm only sticking around because DeviantArt is popular and casual (lol to the point of not caring)(and I'm used to the layout). Instead of llamas or changing how the website looks, I'd like something like disable right-click because that would help towards the art theft thing.

It's weird to think abt being on DA for that long tbh.
When I first joined, I remembered the inbox system was just a notification that said "x has posted a comment on x deviation" and then it had a link to the comment. You couldn't even see the comment until you clicked on it. But buying premium got you an inbox system similar to what we have now, so all my friends and me would buy premiums just so the site was actually usable lol.
DA overall has improved a lot over the years, but like all sites nowadays it's just trying to become a facebook copy and failing at it, so it feels more and more unusable. Like half of the new "features" I don't even use or understand :S

Yea, you can go into your settings and disable notifs for llamas. It was the first thing I did when I made this account.

I AGREE TBH. I don't know of any art site that uses a hue as a bg??? Like even tumblr had the white edges around the post so the pictures weren't in direct contact with the blue. (and it still pisses me off to this day that they go rid of that :\ )

It's honestly them just trying to excuse their laziness bc they don't have the time/money to actually care about art-theft :\
They used to have a disable-right click if my memory serves me correctly, but they got rid of that. It became a problem that people would take screen-shots of images. So if someone wanted to use a reverse search-engine to find the source of a picture it would be impossible.
DA is my only source of income bc no one anywhere else ever buys my art, so I have to use DA if I wanna make money :S

That thing about the inbox? Jeez. I'm not hating on that, I mean the money goes towards making the site nice.
I do notice that push for DA to have more social media elements, like the Watch stuff. That does bug me, since I don't use social media or have any accounts to connect with DeviantArt (idk, tweets/posts feel like trying to advertise a tiny piece of my day that really doesn't matter, even to myself). I vaguely remember they were planning for some portfolio service like Behance but I guess they scrapped that.

Oh boy, yeah, I think I had a workaround for the Tumblr post thing, but it clashed with whoever had photos that matched the new photo width so I just ugh got rid of it. Weird problems like that and having to use xkit just for Tumblr to be convenient is why I didn't move to Tumblr either (I don't think I can use xkit anyway because of my browser)

I'd be more sympathetic if the staff just admitted they don't have the time/money to deal with it. Maybe getting the community involved with that might... do something. There's a lot of anti-theft groups which kinda boosts my morale.

That's also a shame to hear<:/ DA has the 'right' community for us, like people who are willing to buy and know how the digital art scene works, I just think it's not doing the things to keep it (and keep it well). Like I've never really heard of any other place where people advertise commissions, besides personal websites.

Yea, I never bothered linking any of my accounts to DA. Too much of a hassle tbh.
DA actually does have a portfolio service! It's passable, and I have a wip of a portfolio set up there. Tho it could be improved on (I'm not a fan of how streamlined the process is bc I can't customize the layout at all basically)

Tumblr also resizes photos which infuriates me.

Yea, it would be better if they were just more open about it :\ Luckily now people are always on high alert for art theft, so people rarely get away with it for long.

The way most reverse search engines work is they pull data from the actual file itself to search the web for it. This is really really simplified but most reverse engines pull up a "serial code" or smth of the like from the file and search for that. I used to use this site that specialized in finding the very first instance of an image being posted. This technology can also be used to find stolen cameras actually
Most reverse search engines are sophisticated enough to actually look at the picture itself and look for similar images that way. Google is the leader in this and even it's only okay. Like it's passable, it can do it a lot of the times, but (for me at least) google will usually just pull up images with the same color pattern on it.
And, if people take screen shots, then it's at a much much lower resolution and makes it harder to find the original source from content alone.

The only other site I can think of that works just as well as DA with commissions in furaffinity, but I rarely use it :S. I should tho, bc I do a lot of anthro art and it could reach a wider audience, I'm just too lazy to keep another art account active haha.

There's not a lot of news about it and that's basically stopping me from opening my own commissions. Am I mistaken? I asked a friend about it who said it wasn't that big of a deal and she continues to use Paypal but...eh... And I'm clueless with legal speech so I don't really understand what Paypal is saying here.
I remember when people made a fuss about DA having something similar in its TOS but that was granting them permission to basically alter people's art for thumbnails/resizing it for it to be displayed online in the first place.

So, the search engines use metadata + the image content itself, gotcha.

sorry this took so long to get to, I wanted to sit down and read it!
Basically, all this means is that paypal can use your work to advertise themselves. What they get is not ownership, but rather rights to your work (which are v. v. different)
Facebook does the same thing actually! Most large companies do. It's not something I would worry about, but there are other options for accepting usd payment out there if you wanna look into them!!
I use paypal bc it's what everyone uses, and I don't wanna lose a customer bc I couldn't accept their means of payment

Yea, I totally understand. I'm really paranoid about where/how I post my art online.
But as long as a website doesn't try to claim ownership over art I generally use it.
A lot of people use google wallet, but I'm not sure how it works/anything abt it. But that's the only paypal alternative I ever see people using.
