Hello back! Yeh, I m still alive but the last few weeks were rough for me. On the plus side: I have a new job from January on (marking my return to electronics) - Again, sorry for the inactivity over the last few months. I kinda fell into a big, depressing hole after finishing uni and working 60-hour-shifts for a shitty pay, but things start to finally brighten up again. So this time I ve returned! What were you up to the last few months?

Yeah, it kinda is. I just think electronics to be the safer choice. Art seems to be way to unstable to make a living, at least in Germany. If I do this, I m probably gonna be a freelancer / Indy-artist trying to do my thing. The last year was pretty much only disappointment and currently I feel like I didn t make any progress at all. And if I progressed in certain areas then only because I figured it out on my own. Uni kinda let me down on that one.Β

Yeah, you re probably right about that one. Doesn t really get rid of the fact that it is really frustrating to deal with. I don t know about your time-schedule, but we were thought the basics in 8 hours and then it was up to us. No wonder no one knew how to properly script or rig. We were hurrying from topic to topic without any real time to practice the newly learned stuff. And well, the problem with professors, assistants and so on: You never really knew, who to talk to when you had a problem. My feeling is, that all the staff at the university are the guys that couldn t find a job in the industry and did the teaching-profession as some sort of last-option. Really shady, that place, now that I think of it.

art is more about practice, really. We don t have that many pages to go through, it s really all a matter of practice. There are the basics that wont take more than 100 hours and the rest is just working the shit out of it. However, they can t do 100 hours of lectures and then give us 500 hours of practice-time, so they move from one topic to the next. And I would say to become a somewhat decent rigger that can somewhat script and create rigs that work effectively and as intended really does need 500 hours of practice-time. Time, you don t really get since you re already moveing on with the lectures and you need that stuff for the upcoming exams. So you can t just decide to ditch that one lecture in order to work on your rigging-skills. So yeah, the big problem is that they cramped a 3 1/2 years long course into 2 years. It just means, that you get a bunch of people that somehow know rigging, somehow know modelling, know a bit about texturing and also a tiny bit of animation, but you don t get anyone who can be considered an expert at one of those fields. And well: I m not sure, if there are jobs for people with a degree but the same amount of knowledge as the guy with the digitaltutors-account and a big amount of spare time.Β

Well, we had some external tutors that actually work in the field (we had guys from Epic Games, Pixomondo and SΓΌdlicht holding lectures for a few days there), but the employed staff at the uni surely didn t really find a job in the field. At least, judging from some of those guys skills, social competence and ability to plan ahead.

It s just so much info crammed into as little time as somehow possible - I don t like this system, really. Oh well, uni s over now, I passed my finals and now I m done.

Nothing out of the ordinary, like in English. Only difference being, where in English you do ninety and two in German it s two and ninety for a 92.
