Hey, thanks for chancing upon my page and just gushed on whatever I did. It does mean a lot when people just give cred for something done hard.
as for your question, you can see i'm a deviant for four years, and if you take a look back to the first stuff, it is actually a painstaking process. it's also financially hard as well.
as a child, i know i'm born for this. i studied art school (i majored in advertising in college) but i never was this good. i got to this point by drawing, at the same time painting (in manual rendering... say... watercolor). to get the satisfaction, of course, you need the resources. perusing through the web just doesn't get it, so you buy books.
after my stint in painting, which i could get away with daft anatomy, i went and worked as an animator. yeah, cartoons. you need to know motion and emotion. after that, i got hooked into comics and just fell in love with the artwork.
always think, "hey, i can do that!"
don't let the financial aspect fool you. don't just improve your craft because you get to do art commissions. do them for yourself.
here's a tip: when you draw figures, look in the mirror.

life drawing's just for drawing naked people. the best thing is prop yourself in a coffeeshop, draw the guy next to you with a laptop, draw that hobo outside, draw that carjacker.

hi, and thanks! and to answer your question, no, i don't use ANY reference for all my works, except maybe for lighting and shadows. i'm admittedly bad at them.
why, are you about to do something really new to your craft?

sure thing. i will give it a fair critique. i was once a fashion designer wannabe. i tried to apply in different clothing companies and all they could say was, no offense to homosexuals, "sorry, you're not gay enough".

someone has to start from something. i started drawing at an early age, you know, picasso style. then as i encountered comics in high school, i tried my hand in human anatomy. i got good at it, enough to be buried under lots of paint during college. after graduation, i made sure that while i work, i will further improve my technique. i went from drawing insanely buff men to the shapely women you see now.
now, i can't even draw a naked man!
