No tripod, wrong film speed and swarms of mosquitos didn't stop me from shooting a couple of rolls of this awesome thunderhead as it brewed into a phenomanal storm. Amazingly, most of the other shots from this night turned out well.It would have been nice to capture all the fireflies buzzing around at the time.
One of my personal favorites. Photo is 100% untouched.
NOTE: Sorry for the crappy scanner, I'll try to get a better scan if there's a demand.

I totally understand...that was my first thought, that the light from the lightning just obscured the powerline, and that it was a scanner trick...my hubby and I have one, and it does some really wierd shit sometimes. Don't listen to that guy, it's a great shot, and aside from the graininess, you did a fabulous job. Right place, right time, the whole nine yards.
The thumbnail amazed me, and the full version just blew me away. I've always wanted to get a capture like this during a storm.

VERY cool pic! Amazing that you got this without a tripod! Very funny little commenting conversation you've got going on here. If I may add my 2 cents... I do not think the illusion of the lightening going in front of the power lines is a scanner issue. Bright light has a tendency to wrap around silhouetted objects (such as your power line) and blur the edges. This power line is is so small that it's easy for it to get totally obscured by the lightening. I'm sure if you look at the film, or print, you will see that it does the same thing.

Look man, what the hell is your major malfunction? You're simply wrong about the photograph. And I don't appreciate you spamming my deviation with your assinine comments. You and your other 'authorotative friends' are simply wrong, can you understand that?
The photo's been featured in festivals, exposed to countless authorities and other professional photographers. Don't you think that if it was somehow 'trickery' that it would have been detected by now? I have an 2 complete contact sheets from this shoot! My negatives are in a climate controlled vault!
You can't begin to imagine how carefully that particular photograph has been scrutinized by every form of magnification possible. The detail of the photo reveals the tiniest filaments of plasma sifting through the clouds which - I state again, are roughly a mile away.
I don't know how you interpret that the main shot goes behind and back and behind again the wires but you're simply wrong. I was there, I took the photograph and I REALLY DON'T FUCKING APPRECIATE YOUR INFERENCE.
The bolt travels from the ground up - the tiny portion at the bottom of the frame, piercing the cloudburst above - but maybe all that works differently in the dimension you're in.
Do NOT spam my deviation again with your assumptions.

Thanks for your expert scientific opinion. I'm not arguing with you, see what you want. I have the joy and priveledge of having experienced AND captured this moment on film. I have an entire role of shots like this and will be having this and others printed in the very near future.
"Lucky to be alive"? This thunderhead was at least a mile away and as for the shot itself, I wouldn't change a single thing.

This 100% untouched, like I said. As for the 'glitches', my scanner is to blame. The only modification from the original scan was a simple resize (bicubic) nothing else was done to the image.
I'm having this piece re-printed and properly scanned so it can be made available via DevPrints.

Love it! I love lightning photography, nice blues. I have only done lightning photography in black and white, I'll have to try color sometime. The only difficulty is waiting for those moments when there is lightning but no rain.

Beautiful sky. Those power lines are a nice way to border the shot and are a good contrast. heh, and if ya wanna get corny...they help portray the "power" of the storm. sorry A new clean scan could be wallpaper worthy.

Even so, great job, as already commented the man .vs nature, and also capturing the whole length of the lightning from the start through the clouds down to the ground (or is that a different one at the bottom?). I actually sprained my toe trying to get outside at 3am to check out a thunderstorm so loud it shook my house. So my toe thinks this and all other pics of storms stink! But then when we start listening to our toes, we should start collecting gopher wood.

You did an amazing job with this photograph. One of the things I like about it is the conjunction of man-made and natural electricity -- the towers look ominious, the natural lighting beautiful and wild and scary.
The colors are fabulous as well.

I'm torn between liking the power lines and disliking them. In one sense, they are in the way, but in another, it is an interesting contrast of man-made electricity versus mother-nature's electricity.

If used as a wallpaper, I think the power lines detract. BUT! As an image, this is terrific. The juxtaposition of the power lines with the quite menacing thunderhead speak of the struggle between Man and Nature. As in, Nature saying "look who's REALLY master of electricity" or something. Great stuff.
