Well, Marvel unleashed Venom onto readers and lemme tellya, the character was a gold mine. Putting him in an issue of Spider-Man was basically like printing money. Which is technically illegal. Don't print money, kids. Or Spider-Man will punch you and squirt webs in your eyes.
Anyway, Venom = super popular. And if you are a Marvel bad guy who is popular, the big wigs get those cartoon dollar signs in their eyes. Which is super painful, and the only antidote is making more money. And the best way to do that? Give the popular character his own title!
"But Vector Vengers," you say, "Venom is a brain-eating murder jerk....how can he star in a comicbook? Only heroes can do that. Right?" Well, Timmy, the answer to that is "shut up."
The other answer is: make a character WORSE than the bad guy to fight, so he is now relatively good in comparison. In comes Cletus Cassidy.
Cletus was Eddie Brock's cellmate briefly after Spidey beat him the first time. Little did Eddie know, tho, that his symbiote made a little res, gooey baby symbiote and left it in the prison. It bonded with Cletus...who was, of course, a notorious serial killer...and blammo: instant worse-than-Venom bad guy.
Meet Carnage. His power is that he is super murdery. Now Venom doesn't seem so evil, eh?
