Description
Gekido City, at Miku's house a few days ago ...It is the last week of the summer holidays and we find Miku and her friends gathered at her home to complete their holiday homework which, in the best tradition of students everywhere, they have all left till the last few days of their holidays.
Neru: So who has started doing any of this at all? And for the record, I've completed one third of mine.
Gumi: Same here.
Alice: I made a start but then stuff happened ...
Miku: I haven't even opened any of mine. *smiling*
Neru: That's not something to be proud of Miku. What about you IA? Why are you strangely quiet?
IA: Eh ... actually, I finished all my summer homework during the first week of the holidays.
Gumi: So why are you here? We're gathered here to get the rest of this done!
IA: Miku said to come over for a sleepover ...
Alice: So where's your homework?
IA: I left it at home.
Gumi and Alice: Go home and get it so that we can copy it!
IA: Hell, no!
Neru: In that case you can serve snacks, make tea and help Miku.
Miku: I'll take a leek soda and a leek burger on a sesame bun!
IA: Do I look like the domestic type to any of you or something? *With hands on hips*
Gumi: Knowing you, you'll be very "domestic" if we were guys ...
Well the squabbling continued but they do actually manage to do some of their homework or at the very least they managed to copy each others homework. So by the time IA had finished cooking dinner, they only had their history project left. The assignment was to write a report on an incident in history that changed the course of history.
Neru: So since you already finished your homework IA, what did you write for your report?
IA: I wrote about the sinking of the Titanic.
Gumi and Alice: Sinking of the Titanic? How is that a world changing event?
IA: Well it was for the survivors ...
Gumi: So what references did you cite or use? You don't strike me as the type that hangs around a Public Library ...
IA: Oh, I just rented the movie and worked from that ...
Gumi, Alice and Neru: *facepalm*
There is a knock at the door. So Miku gets up to answer. It was Dr. Who who was looking for Luka. Luka was not at her home so he thought she might be at Miku's house. He soon discovered that the girls were stuck on their history homework so he 'volunteered' to help.
Dr. Who: Well History is fun. In fact it could be pretty epic. Take Napoleon's campaign of 1815 for example. That was a world changing event if there ever was one. BTW, if you'll like I can send you back there and you can see it first hand.
Miku: MIKU LIKE !
Having a short attention span, especially for anything associated with book learning, she naturally jumped at this opportunity. After all seeing the real thing sure beats the crap out of watching the abbreviated DVD version, and in any case, history dramas tended to put Miku to sleep. So it did not take her long to get all excited and since this seemed to have a 'fun factor' she naturally dragged the other four into this adventure.
Two were more than happy to go (Gumi and Alice) and the other two (Neru and especially IA) were more circumspect, but they were out voted since Miku had the deciding vote.
So the doctor told them to pack some clean clothing and gave them some money from that period, then ushered them into the Tardis. Since they were going to observe a battle, he also allowed them to arm themselves just in case of trouble. His only condition was that they could only take weapons of that period, which meant muskets and since Alice was their "weapons expert" he told her to take five muskets and ammo from the Tardis' armory. Now, not all muskets are equal. What Alice did not tell the Doctor, and what he failed to check, was that she selected rifled muskets that were used during the American Civil War of the 1860s and this gave the girls a huge technological advantage. But still, they looked like muskets ...
Brussels, outside the Duchess of Richmond's Ball. June 15th, 1815 ...
Dr. Who: Now before I introduce you girls to your chaperone, let me emphasize one thing: DON'T DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE HISTORY!.
Now I know you're still in your 21st Century costumes but we can get away with that to a point as the military uniforms during this period is a little outlandish anyway. Now, you can all speak the language as we've fixed that in the Tardis but the effect will wear off in about 48 hours which gives you just enough time. Don't lose your cell phone Neru, as I'll be using that to locate you when it's time to pick you up, so remember to stay together. Any questions? No. Good, then let me introduce you to Capt. Mercer from the Royal Horse Artillery as you'll be staying with him for the duration of your stay during this period.
And so The Doctor introduced them to a charming officer of the Royal Horse Artillery who was one of his contacts during this period and explained the situation to him. He was dubious at first but the girls looked charming enough and being quite unlike the girls of his own period in both attire and behavior, he soon took an interest to them and took charge of them per The Doctor's request. Although he would later on write down his memoirs of the period he prudently left out the girls presence from his writings.
Capt. Mercer: Well then, let's just go in then. This should be fun for you. It's a Ball being held in honor of the Duke of Wellington by the Duchess of Richmond. A rather posh event to be sure, being only for officers and eligible young ladies. Feel free to mix in and have fun, I'll pick you all up when the party is over.
The girls needed no further invitation. After all, none of them had ever been invited to a formal ball before. OK, the music wasn't exactly to their tastes but there were plenty of young handsome officers and everyone was either in ball gowns or colorful full dress uniforms and they soon found themselves the focus of much attention, especially given the skimpiness of their costumes when compared with the attire for that period.
Miku quickly found herself the focus of attention for the officers of the elite 95th Rifles Regiment as her attire was very similar to their uniform. Her bubbly nature quickly made her their favorite and soon she was almost adopted as their mascot.
Neru found kindred spirits amongst the Gordon Highlanders. Her naturally abrasive attitude suited their Scottish ways admirably and she was soon a favorite in their circle. She even did a sword dance with them which she herself much preferred to the waltzes.
Alice was a natural favorite of the Brunswickers, probably because her costume looked similar to their black uniform.
IA soon found herself the focus of attention for Wellington's staff officers. Her natural grace and snobbish attitude made her a natural compliment for these scions of the British nobility and she certainly knew how to charm them when it came down to it.
Gumi, however, had a problem. She found herself, due to the colors of her costume, a fast favorite of the contingent from the Netherlands. This she didn't mind, but she had also attracted the unwanted attentions of the Prince of Orange who she took an immediate dislike to, finding him to be a boor. That withstanding, she did note that she did have the attentions of a Prince which gave her one up-man-ship on her friends.
So she just put up with his company and turned on the "charm", more so to rub it to her friends than anything else. Truth be told though, none of them were paying her any attentions.
However, their fun was soon interrupted by the appearance in the Ballroom of a weather beaten Prussian officer who was desperately seeking out the Duke of Wellington. As it turned out the Duke was being introduced to the girls just as this man appeared. He had important news for the Duke and he soon took him to a private room for discussions. Apparently, he bought news that Napoleon and the French Army had crossed over the border just earlier in the day and were now en-route. The party was allowed to continue inspite of this crisis, but all the officers were told to leave and return to their units to begin their march south to meet the threat.
This meant that the girls had to leave too, and they soon followed Capt. Mercer back to his unit to begin their march south. The girls, however, did not leave with Capt. Mercer. They were tired after all the homework they did from earlier in the day and then from the dancing at the Ball later that evening. So Capt. Mercer arranged for them to have a place to sleep and told them to hitch a ride with the supply wagons to join him the following day. They wouldn't actually join him until the evening of the 17th of June as Miku wanted to spend sometime sight-seeing in Brussels. Which meant that the girls missed seeing the battle fought at Quatre Bras. Napoleon had split his forces into two parts. He used a third of his army to hold the British and their allies in place at Quatre Bras, the two thirds he himself commanded to defeat the Prussians at Ligny. He succeeded in pushing the Prussians back, but their army remained primarily intact and they retreated towards Wavre. Thinking that the Prussians could essentially be written off for the moment, he sent one third of his army to follow them and with the rest he marched towards Quatre Bras to join up with his other forces there with the aim of destroying the British. The British weren't going to sit around for that so the Duke of Wellington ordered the entire army to retreat towards the north with a mind to giving battle on ground of his own choosing. A place called Waterloo, that he surveyed up to a year before with a mind for using it in an eventuality such as this.
The retreat from Quatre Bras. Late evening, June 17th, 1815 ...
It was night and raining heavily when the girls finally caught up with Capt. Mercer's troops on June 17th. Capt. Mercer's unit, was a horse artillery unit, which meant that they were specially equipped to be able to keep up with and support the cavalry. Which meant that during this retreat, his cannons and part of the cavalry was providing the rear guard for the rest of the army. In this they were aided by the abysmal weather as the rain soon turned the roads to mud and that hampered pursuit by the French. Still, according to Capt. Mercer's diaries, there were some exciting skirmishes between the two sides when they did meet. What is important for our story is that this was how the girls managed to find their own cannon. It was on their way to meet up with the good Captain which meant that they were moving in the opposite direction to the retreat.
The cannon that they found belonged to the a Dutch unit that had felt that they had seen enough of battle and simply decided to abandon it, together with the horses used to pull it. The cannon was mired in the mud and with the French in close pursuit the cannon's previous owners felt it more prudent to leave it rather than risk being captured by the French. In any case, it was Miku who spotted the cannon first. It was in partially in a ditch by the side of the road that they were marching on.
Miku: Wow, look what I found!
Neru: It better be either food or shelter ... *She was soaked and hungry which meant that she was not in a good mood.*
Alice: Oh, it's a cannon!
Gumi: Well, why don't we just take the horses (there were six of them). At least this way we don't have to walk.
IA: I second that ... my poor boots are covered in mud!!!
Alice: I thought you said mud treatments were good for your complexion.
IA: Haha, and I suppose you think you're very clever with that last remark, but just let me reiterate, I'm smart and you're not.
Miku: Let's take it. It'll be fun. Just imagine, our own 19th Century cannon. We can take it home and put it in front of my house. Won't that be grand!
Neru: No ...
Gumi: It's stuck fast in the mud, but with a bit of applied physics ...
Alice: That thing still weighs about 2000 lbs, Gumi.
But neither Gumi nor Miku were deterred. So they tried to lever the cannon out with some branches that they found nearby and had Neru and Alice push. IA declined to help because as she put it, "manual work wasn't her forte". But she did managed to attract the attentions of a group of retreating cavalry men and with a wink and a smile she got them to pitch in and soon the cannon was back on the road again. Claiming a seat on the caisson, since as she put it, she earned it, the girls, escorted by the cavalry men rode on through the night and were eventually able to catch up with Capt. Mercer's battery. He was surprised to see the cannon, but welcomed the addition of another gun as he knew well that every gun would be needed for the following day. So he did ask if they knew how to use it. Alice told him that she did, which was true. She was the only one who actually knew how to use a cannon of this type and she already had a plan.
So before they went to sleep, which was difficult anyway as they had to shelter under blankets under the cannon from the rain, she explained to the others how to load and fire the gun and assigned roles accordingly.
- Miku would fire the gun, since she found it.
- IA would load the charge into the gun since she didn't want to get her hands dirty (obvious lie on Alice's part).
- Alice would load the actual munitions. They had 30 shots in the caisson.
- Neru would ram the shot and charge down the tube as well as to wash out the barrel with water between shots with water using the "sponge" side of the rammer.
- Gumi would be in charge of aiming the cannon because her maths was better than everyone else's. She and Miku also had to run the gun back into position after every shot as the cannon had no recoil mechanism.
Because it was raining so hard, they couldn't actually practice. So the first time they will fire the cannon will be the following day during the battle. They huddled together miserably in the cold and the wet and somehow managed to get some sleep despite the incessant complaints from IA about the conditions.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, early morning ...
The girls woke up groggy, cold, wet and hungry. Some of the troops had started campfires and were using these to dry out their clothing. Rations were also being handed out. Capt. Mercer offered the girls some of the hard tack but IA declined his offer. Instead, as it turned out, she had prepared sandwiches and these were individually wrapped in sandwich bags. This kept them dry, but not crushed. However, they were still more appetizing than the hard tack and even Capt. Mercer was pleased when he offered the spare she had prepared as breakfast. They did, however, share the tea the troops brewed. It was coarse, but at least it was warm. Being an avid Eco-freak, IA insisted on collecting all the used sandwich bags for reuse. In actual fact, she had brought along the rest of the bags in the package. About 100 of them.
Their cannon was to be deployed on the ridge alongside Capt. Mercer's battery, this was roughly at the center of Wellington's battle line.. The part of the ridge where they were was behind a small fortified farm house called La Haie Sainte. To the west of this was a larger fortified estate called Hougoumont. To the east was the village of Papelotte and to the south across the valley was the French Army. The Prussian, were expected to be coming also from the east, but they would take some time to get here.
Napoleon knew he had to defeat Wellington before the Prussians arrived and devised a plan to do so. Time was of the essence. This was his plan:
- Marshal Ney was to have operational command of the battle.
- Marshal Reille, commander of a corp was to distract Wellington by making a feint at Hougoumont.
- Marshal Lobau, commander of a corp was to hold the right flank against the Prussians when they arrived.
- Marshal D'Erlon, commanded the corp which was to make the main attack. This would be up along the road astride La Haie Sainte.
- The cavalry and the Imperial Guard was to be held in reserve. Both were to have a crucial role in Napoleon's plan to destroy Wellington's army.
Miku on the other hand decided that she wanted a front row seat of the battle and deployed her cannon below the ridge immediately to the north of a large gravel pit on the other side of La Haie Sainte. This placed her amongst many of her friends in the 95th Rifles who were positioned in and around the gravel pit. However, this also meant that her cannon was the one closest to the French and well ahead of the main allied position securely safe behind the ridge. They deployed the cannon and left the horses safely behind La Haie Sainte. The girls had 30 cannon balls at the start of the battle and of course their muskets. Still, they will be in for the fight of their lives.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, around 11 AM ...
Time was not on Napoleon's side and neither was the weather the night before. The ground was too soft to start the battle early in the morning which was what he wanted so he decided to have the battle start at around noon after a review of his troops. The actual time that the battle started was actually determined neither by Napoleon nor Wellington, but by Miku ...
Alice: So does everybody understand how to work this cannon now?
Neru: Yep, I use this end of the rammer to shove in the charge and the shot. Then after the cannon is fired I use water and the sponge side of the rammer to wash out the barrel before the next shot is loaded.
IA: I take these bags of charges from these barrels and hand them to you Alice to load into the barrel together with the cannon balls. Why do I get the dirtiest job? This gunpowder is smelly and it's going to get me all black and ...
Gumi: I use this block to adjust the gun's elevation and help Miku to push the cannon back onto the chocks after each round.
Miku: To fire the gun I use this poker to punch a hole in the charge in the barrel thru this hole. Insert a piece of linkstock into the hole and then light it with this stick like this ... OPPS !!!
BOOM
Miku's cannon fires and her shot wizzes over the heads of the startled riflemen in the gravel pit below. It travels across the valley and heads straight for Napoleon who was galloping amongst his troops to cheer them on before the battle. The cannon ball narrowly misses Napoleon but it kills Marshal Ney's horse from under him. It would not be the first horse that Ney would lose that day from actions caused by Miku. Recovering from his fall he surveyed the allied lines for the source of the shot which was easy enough to spot from even about a mile away as the smoke from the discharge was a dead giveaway. He noted the girls colorful "uniforms", but not their gender from this distance. He made a mental note.
Napoleon on the other hand decided that was all he needed to begin the battle and upon his command, within minutes later the Grand Battery of the French Army, approximate 80 heavy guns responded to Miku's challenge. Marshal Reille was also ordered to begin his attack on Hougoumount. Most of the Allied troops were safe behind the ridge so were safe from the shelling from the French cannons. The Allied cannons and light troops were on the forward slopes. The latter had prudently gone to ground for cover, leaving the Allied cannons to respond to the French. No Allied gun was as effective as Miku's as theirs was the only one within range of the French cannons. Gumi's math was good and soon the girls had the range and a lucky shot blew up a French caisson causing it to explode spectacularly. But soon the smoke from their discharges obscured their vision so they could hardly see what to fire at and so they stopped to eat lunch. The French cannonade, however, continued for well over an hour over their heads. No one was paying much attention to one solitary cannon near the gravel pit. They should have as it would play a decisive part in the battle only about two hours later.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, around 1 PM ...
Neru: Do you hear that?
Gumi: Yeah ... *As she wakes up from the nap she was having next to the cannon.
The two girls peer cautiously over their cannon to see 24,000 yelling men in a large column marching towards their position. They were D'Erlon's Corp with the main assault of the day. They were tasked with breaking Wellington's center by a brute force assault. Well, before they could get at Wellington's army, they would have to get past the girls first ...
Alice: Move faster IA! They're rape you if they capture you!
IA: *Thinks for a moment then moves crazy fast, she plunged straight into the ammo barrel to get more powder charges.*
Gumi: FIRE!!!
The girls worked efficiently firing round after round into the massive column that was fast approaching their position. Other Allied guns behind them also had opened fired at this time, but despite appalling carnage they kept right on coming.
Alice: We're out of ammo!
Gumi: These kind of cannons will shoot anything right?
Alice: Yep, even rocks if you can fit them into the barrel.
Miku: Well, there's plenty of rocks down in that gravel pit below us ...
Gumi: Sometimes Miku, you're a genius! Here's what we're going to do, now listen up ...
IA: And why was it again that I have to go into the gravel pit?
Which is exactly what she ended up doing. Since she had the sandwich bags they told her to fill these with gravel and to toss the filled bags up back to Alice who would shove several bags together with the gunpowder charges into the barrel. So in essence, the girls had the equivalent of a very large shot gun. This they used with devastating effect on the rapidly closing column part of which, under the withering fire from this gun, the riflemen in the gravel pit and the fire from the troops in the farm house on the other side of the road began to falter in their stride. Wellington threw other troops into the fight, most noticeably the highlanders. But there was still 24,000 men against about 6000 men and the girls and it was anyone's guess how it would all end. It was at that point that the British threw in their cavalry and soon the French were scattered in a shambles and were ridden down. The British cavalry, flushed with success then went off towards the French guns on the other side of the valley. Not a prudent thing to do as they were in turn ridden over by the French cavalry waiting in reserve.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, between 3-5 PM ...
Marshal D'Erlon managed to reorganize his survivors for another attack. This was less hard pressed than the original attack and did not succeed either. The girls staunchly maintaining their position (they had received supplies for their cannon in the interim) until ordered to withdraw to the ridge. Their move was detected by Marshal Ney and together with other units being redeployed back behind the ridge to escape the French artillery bombardment, he made the mistake of thinking that Wellington was retreating. So he ordered his cavalry to probe and pursue them. In fact, he was to go with them. But the British were not retreating and they saw them coming and redeployed their infantry into squares.
During this period, infantry men protected themselves by adopting a square formation four ranks deep. The first two ranks kneeling and presenting a row of bayonets that no sensible horse would charge into. The ranks behind providing support fire to further discomfort attacking cavalry men. The technique was very effective, but did make the infantry vulnerable to enemy artillery fire and attack by infantry. But at Waterloo, Marshal Ney made no effort to support his cavalry with infantry so the cavalry came alone.
Miku and the girls loaded up on Capt. Mercer's order with one cannon ball and one canister round. A canister was basically a bag of lead balls and worked on the same principle as the gravel filled sandwich bags that they were firing earlier. This, however, was a far more lethal cocktail. They were also told to not fire until the enemy was almost on top of them and then to discharge the cannon and run to the nearest square for protection.
As chance would have it, Marshal Ney found himself right in front of Miku's cannon and she had no problems discharging the cannon in his face. It killed his horse outright, but he remained unscathed. The girls had in the interim scampered to the relative safety of the infantry square behind them. They lay on the ground beneath the rows of bayonets, then returned to serve their cannon the moment the cavalry withdrew for another charge. And so Marshal Ney lost another two horses in further futile attacks on Miku's position.
Napoleon who had been napping during the first cavalry attacks for some inexplicable reason decided to exacerbate the problem by supporting Ney's mad charges. So in the end 50,000 of France's finest cavalry were thrown into a series of futile and murderous attacks against the British squares. Unhorsed for yet another time by Miku, whom Marshal Ney had by now learnt to recognize, he finally decided to do the right thing.
Specifically, he took some of Marshal Reille's infantry who were still unengaged (about 6000 men) and had them march towards Miku's position to support what was left of the cavalry. Which actually wasn't a smart thing to do as he sent them along a path where not only were they fired on by Miku and the infantry up on the ridge, but they had to suffer fire from their flanks from Hougoumount and La Haie Sainte. The attack was driven back with horrendous losses and Ney lost another horse to Miku's cannon.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, around 5 PM ...
By this point of the battle the Prussians had begun to make their presence felt on the French right and Napoleon was rightly concerned and so he focused his attentions on this flank. This left Marshal Ney with no fresh troops to press his attacks, but he did manage to finally dislodge the defenders of La Haie Sainte and with this vital point under his control he sent at least his light infantry in to harass the British who was still in their squares. Plus the French cannonade resumed now that what was left of the cavalry had been withdrawn. By this time they had the range on the British position and they were finally managing to do some serious damage. Fortunately for Miku and the girls, they did not have to take the bombardment with the infantry squares. They went back to service their cannon one more time until it was destroyed in a gun duel between Miku and a few guns from a French Horse artillery battery which had followed their cavalry earlier. Unfortunately for them, the girls then switched over to using their 1860s rifle muskets and these out ranged the cannons. Besides which, being breach loading weapons, they could be fired from a prone position which made the girls almost impossible to hit. They soon silenced these cannons and then joined some of the 95th Rifles that were exchanging fire with their French counterparts on the forward slopes.
The Battle of Waterloo. June 18th, 1815, around 7 PM, the attack of the Imperial Guard and the real reason why it failed ...
Once again it was Miku's and the girls' fault. This was what happened ...
This was the climax to the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon having finally checked the Prussian advance on his right flank decided that the moment had come to finish off Wellington with the use of his precious Imperial Guards. These were all veterans of many of Napoleon's campaigns and had never been defeated. There was about 4000 of them and he personally supervised their tactical disposition. Which in retrospect was probably the worse disposition possible. They divided into three waves with the first 5 battalions advancing in columns each with a general in charge. All of these columns were led by Marshal Ney in person and as fate would have it he choose the worse possible route for them to take. Straight into Miku's position.
Miku and the girls were roughly positioned where their destroyed cannon was. They were at the forward slope with a grand view of the spectacle of the Imperial Guards massing before them. Having faced down 24,000 men earlier in the day, the girls were not fazed. Behind them, hidden in the rye fields were two of the most capable formations of the British army. As with most of these attacks, the French columns were preceded by their light infantry which provided a protective screen and these were soon engaged with their counterparts on the British side. Remanents of units such as the 95th Rifles who by this point in the day had lost most of their officers, but were still in good spirit. Miku and the girls on the otherhand, other than Alice who was happily sniping away at the French, remained hidden in the tall grass.
Gumi: You know Miku, this may not be the best place to be at this time. They're going to march right over us ..
Miku: Yep, but do you see what I see?
Neru: What?
IA: I think I broke a nail ...
Miku: That guy again. *She points at Marshal Ney at the head of the column.*
Neru: Persistent isn't he?
Miku: It's his fault out cannon broke.
Gumi: Yeah, you might have a point there. I was getting fond of that gun.
Neru: So you want to get him?
IA: Hang on, we can't do that. The Doctor said we can't do anything to change history remember?
Miku: I'm not saying we should kill him, we should just knock him off his horse again.
IA: I don't think we should be doing that ... *But of course she was out voted.*
When Marshal Ney and the Imperial Guardsmen got within 100 yards of the girl's position, on Miku's command they got up and fired a volley at Marshal Ney and knocked him off his horse again. The suddenness of their attack caught the lead of the column by surprise as the girls had appeared to just come out of the ground and all of a sudden the focal point of their advance,Marshal Ney, seemed to have suddenly disappeared. Worse still, the girls continued to maintain a brisk fire. The problem for the guardsmen was this. The girls shooting was accurate and it was fast since the girls could fire their weapons as quickly as they could be loaded. In essence they were deluged by a hail of bullets, and although there were only five girls and they weren't actually causing that much damage it was the psychological effect more than anything that caused them to hesitate, but before they could recover their senses the British units behind the girls also appeared out from behind the rye they were hiding under and laid on a devastating series of volleys. It was too much, and for the first time in their history, the Guards were repulsed and were soon chased back down the slope by the British.
With this repulse, cohesion within the French Army suddenly collapse and essentially the battle was over and the rest was history. The girls were too tired to join in on the pursuit as were the rest of the Wellington's tired army, so they left the pursuit to the relatively fresh Prussians. Doctor Who appeared shortly before midnight to return them to the present, thanking Capt. Mercer for looking after them. Capt. Mercer had nothing but praise for the conduct of the girls which caused the Doctor some concern as he was worried that they had somehow changed history, but the historical references in the Tardis did not indicate that anything changed.
However, we now know why some of the strange decisions that were made on that day were made. Primarily, the otherwise capable Marshal Ney made some bad decisions most likely due to all the falls that he had taken from the horses shot from under him by Miku and the girls. Although they were present in some of the high points in the battle, when viewed from a broader perspective, they didn't really effect the overall outcome of events.
But they did fail in one thing.
All of them got an "F" for their history homework as they were too tired to write down their report on their experiences at Waterloo. Instead, they all just copied IA's Titanic homework, and since the history teacher was not stupid and had also watched the movie they all ended up having to redo their history homework again, this time as detention in the school library. IA was naturally livid as she had never been in detention before and so they all had to listen to her gripes on the way home afterwards. That was until they got to a ramen store where they stopped by for dinner. As Miku put it, it was great to be back home again in the present.
LA FIN
NOTE: I was planning on doing something like this for sometime now. Idea actually came up about a year ago. Not sure how well this was carried out. It's hard to abbreviate a couple of days into a short format like this and harder still to make a battle "funny" as in general they are not fun places to be. I also have some qualms about letting the girls actually harm others, even in fiction so I have tended to gloss over the violence.
This piece is based on the historical record although I've left a lot of facts and events out of the story, primarily focusing on what happened to the girls. I did think of spreading them out. Gumi's interaction with the Prince of Orange would have been fun to further investigate, but then I needed five girls to manage the cannon. Plus spreading the girls out through the historical units mentioned in the story would have lengthen this work considerably. Likewise I had initially planned to have more interaction between the girls and some of the principle characters like the Duke of Wellington and the Duchess of Richmond. But once again, in the interest of brevity, I left those areas unexplored.
Anyway, if you do take the time to read this, do let me know what you think and whether or not I should do more historical type scenarios with Miku and her gang. Thanks.
(Also, please refrain from posting "TL : DR" type comments. We really don't need to know how retarded you are. Cheers).

The poor, poor horses... I have never read a historical spoof so brilliantly executed. If I weren't reading this at midnight, I would honestly have laughed aloud in some parts. Well done!

Thanks; these are fun to do. Been thinking of putting this lot on the Titanic. That could be "interesting", especially since I've just watched a video of the movie just recently and I could just see them fitting into places in the story.

Wat... what the heck did I just read...? There was Vocaloids, and Dr Who, and French people, and cannons, and BOOM, and blaaaah...

I really should just build them a time machine. Just never got around to it and "Dr. Who" is a convenient ploy to get them where I need to in time and space.

Do it. Go nuts. It doesn't even have to look like a time machine. The cars. Use the cars. Time travelling cars. CARDIS. Do it. Please. I want to see it. Please.

When I discussed this with someone else we were thinking like the Stargate from the television series. It can double up as a performance stage. The alternative approach, which I personally like is to build a weird Victorian style or 1950s B movie Sci-Fi flick contraption. I think someone already made a model of the Back-to-the-Future sports car/time machine. That's fine for 2 people, but usually I use a few more than two in my skits so it's got to be bigger.

I do like the idea of a time machine that doubles as a stage. Ooh, maybe a Victorian style Stargate stage!
Maybe Gumi somehow upgrades each of the cars with a flux capacitor, Back to the Future style!

Thanks
They're a different kind of challenge to write so makes for an interesting distraction.

Very interesting. I would love to see another one of these. Though there is still the Hounds of the Baskervilles that had it's story cut half

So you think I should finish the Miku Holmes series?
