MMD Miku's Rant on the Rules ...

Description WALL OF TEXT WARNING

Miku: Can I go sit down now?
Me: Yeah, sure thing, thanks for the help ... :) (Smile)
Miku: (walks over to the bandstand on her Telstar stage; then she sits down and chews on a leek she had somehow managed to hide amongst her clothing)

OK, you might be curious what all this is about, and here's the low down. I was looking for something for Miku this morning and the only thing that I found close was listed somewhere here on DA. In the commentary section was this text (and I am sure all of you have seen similar text elsewhere accompanying models offered for download on DA):

MY MODEL RULES:
-DO NOT EDIT!
-DO NOT CLAIM AS YOUR OWN
-CREDIT ME WHEN YOU USE HER!
-DON'T ... sic
-Comment if you download her ... sic
-SHE WILL BE TAKEN DOWN IF YOU GUYS BREAK MY RULES EVEN ONCE! ... sic ... I don't want people abusing her, so if she's abused ONE BIT, she WILL be taken down as soon as I learn that she's being abused.

Well, with an invitation like that, what else could you do but to pass on the download and move on? But it does make you think why people even bother to offer models for download with that kind of attitude doesn't it?

Now, what I am going to say is probably going to be controversial, but hey, this is all in the spirit of a good debate ... right?

I have made a lot of original models for MMD. For the most part these models uses no rips or borrowed parts, everything is built from scratch. (Ok, I may have used some textures such as Miku posters, but for the most part these serve more to promote Miku related products than anything else). And where I have used parts by others (even on rips done by others) due credit is noted somewhere (unless there's no readme.txt and like I'm some kind of pyschic and can remember who to credit from memory ... doh).

However, if you noticed, none of the models I offer for download are accompanied by any rules; not even a whine for "CREDIT ME WHEN YOU USE".

Instead, they are all simply covered under a Creative Commons License as noted on each model's home page in the right hand column under where it says License. ie.:

Some rights reserved. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License.

If you're unclear what that means exactly, just click on the link that DA has kindly provided.

Each download, is packaged with a readme.txt containing all the information you need to know pertaining to the download, and in all cases, full (and sometimes even illustrated) instructions so that even most beginners can get the benefits from the model.

There are no whines about:

- not editing (that's already covered by the terms of the license)
- you'll be a real bastard/bitch if you claimed it as your own
- I don't really give a toss whether I'm credited or not if used (after all that's just a courtesy right?)
- there are no restrictions on use (except the non-commercial/non-profit part)
- and there are no threats on taking down the model for "in-fractions". Like why would I even think of doing something as stupid as that?

Oh, did I mention I really get ticked off by hypocrites? If there was a model I really care that much about that I would be upset if people did with it things I didn't like, I would never offer it for download on the Internet. Come on already, talk about sprouting crap; what possible motive would you have on offering a model for download if you're worried that it might be abused? I'll tell you what I think it is, and I'm not going to mince words here; if you did something like that, you're nothing but an "attention whore".

And to "rub salt into the wound", so to speak, in many instances the models in question were cobbled together by parts from other models, repainted and renamed. I really do feel sorry for the original Japanese modelers sometimes and can understand why some of them are so upset with the MMD community outside of Japan.

I've been modeling/modding for games for awhile now. Not counting what I've done for MMD, I actually have had over 1,000,000 downloads worldwide - all for free and with no restrictions other than what's noted above.

Do you want to know why I do this?

It's really very simple:

1/. I enjoy what I'm doing and I actually use my own "crap".
2/. I like to share, I'm a big believer in "community", online or otherwise.
3/. I actually make the models for YOU.

Personally, I've probably never met "you", but I know you're out there. We probably will never meet in real life, but that doesn't matter as we connect every time you visit my words, pictures, work and I appreciate that as you have your own life; your time is important to you and the fact that you view, comment, download or use my work honors me.

So why on Earth would I want to put conditions on that?

.
..
...

Miku: You done? Like I'm bored here already ...
Me: Yeah, sure, thanks for waiting.
Miku: Can we see the rest of Nagisa City? I think it had a Shopping Mall ... ^^
Me: Yep, we sure could ... but I was rather hoping to check out that fishing boat that came with the city model.
Miku: Hentai! You just want to see me in a bikini again!
Me: Nope, seriously I just want to see that boat.
Neru: Actually he just wants to see me in a bikini again ^^
Miku: Oh, yeah, what have you got that I don't have ... ?

.... and so the saga continues - thanks for visiting!

Dead people were once living people; so was the big fuss about "death" anyway? In this age of non-discrimination, shouldn't "dead" people be given the same considerations as "living" people?

In many traditional, non-western cultures, "dead" people, are given due respect and consideration. Maybe we could all learn a little something from those beliefs and practices. So in my book, ghosts aren't scary. They are just people who have "passed on" to a different state of existence.

"and no once you are dead you are no longer in this world you cant consider them living but history"

No longer in this world? Are you sure? How do you explain ghosts, then?

How do you define "life" and for that matter "death"? Do you cease to exists after "life"; and if you do not cease after life, then isn't "death" or rather the state after death, another form of existence?

As for reincarnation; that is a fascinating possibility that many major religions ascribe to a belief of; so I am with you on that one.

But back to Larissa; if she is a ghost, where is she on the life>death>post-death>reincarnation cycle of existence? Interesting to think about.

Meanwhile: Whole crowd of other mmd miku models walk past me while reading this-

me: hmmm...yea I dont think your miku will be missed. xD

And seriously, no hugs or kisses? Have you no heart? Let the poor things hug you monsters. xD

Dont put em up if you are going to put up a million rules.

Well done to this rant, bravo friend.

Actually, in most cases with models that have these kind of rules, they would do the world a favor by taking them down given their quality of workmanship.

YukoISBadMedicineYukoISBadMedicine [2017-03-31 07:20:07 +0000 UTC]

I see issues from both sides really. I am new to MMD (just learning how to use it new) and I get some people want credit or not claim someone else's work as your own as people work hard on it, not to redistribute the models without permission and all that (it is only polite if you are using someone's work, though if you put things out for the public to use, you are giving people permission to use your work either way and you should be prepared and expect that really); but some rules are ridiculous and way over the top. If I made one that I didn't want people to use for whatever reason, I wouldn't upload it in the first place. What would be the point?

First of all, a lot of MMDs I see and have are based off well know characters. The mmders made models for them; but don't own the characters themselves and yet they tell you not do use them for this or that (I can understand not using models for commercials and making money off it as they can get into trouble when it comes copying writing and people should follow any law in general as that is a given, though I really don't see that happening really. What would be odds or chances that someone actually tried that?); but they tell people not to use them to even kissing or hug, etc.... I think it should be up to the original creator of the characters on what they want people to used them for, not modelers.
They are already taking someone's else's character and making models for them without permission, I don't think they should have a say unless it is their own character.

Another issue I see is how exclusive some people can really be. Many of the Japanese MMDers don't seem to like non-Japanese MMDers at all. I get that people break rules at times (even if some rules are ridiculous, I will either following them or just pass on downloading the model); but it is like they think that it only us who break rules. I am sure some Japanese MMDers and people outside of Western/non-English speaking countries break rules as well. It is kind of condescending to assume only we do or that we will as if we don't care about following rules which for most people it isn't true. Seems kind of snobby and rude to me.
Some rules weren't written in English or even legible in some cases. How are people supposed to follow something that they don't understand? It could be an innocent mistake that the person didn't know and nobody politely told them about it.  Most have rules in English and can understand them for the most part; but there are some models where the rules were written either in Japanese only or is just random symbols. Though most models are easy to get just by logging in bowlroll and translating. It may take some work though; but it is not impossible unless the models are no longer distributed at all. I am kind of disappointed that there are a few I couldn't get all all; but oh well, I just move on to something else.

Some rules I seen that you can't even give out the link for some models. Really? That isn't even redistributing or sharing passwords; but directing people on where they can find the models. They can just google where to find them anyways and I would rather people know where to look if I made models instead of people just getting my work from their friends or redistributing it to others.

Personally I wouldn't care if people edit my work if I made any as long as they still give me some credit and didn't redistribute without asking first. Some edits I have seen were pretty cool, like different outfits and all that.

I feel some MMDers just make more drama and take all the fun out of things which sort of defeats the purpose. If I could make my own from scratch, I would just do that and skip all the fuss and hassle. Though this the problem I find in almost any fandoms and communities (even in sports), people always want to make big deal and drama over nothing usually. Sad; but comes with the territory I suppose.

This is just my two cents on the matter.

Nothing to be sorry about; I ramble at length, too. But I learned to use Journals to do them rather than comment posts. This is simply because of the nature of DA posts; long ones are really hard to follow and read. Which makes it tough for people to comment on them to continue a discussion.

The PMD/PMX Editor is only used for editing models, it's not a modeling program (it actually sucks big time as a modeling program). You can, and most models made for MMD are, use software like Blender or Metasequoia to build humanoid models for MMD. And these programs for the most part are free although I believe that there are some function restrictions with the free version of Blender.

There are MMD models out there that have no use restrictions or are actually made for sexual stuff, but you'll need to go to Japanese sites to find links for them.

I won't comment on your morbid liking for gore and such; you're free to explore your own preference and that's fine by me as long as it doesn't harm others.

when people restrict people from doing things i think thats like trying to limit there creativity

like certain hetalia models can't be used for love or affection.....they DO know what hetalia is known for RIGHT ? for it's pairing bait mostly

or how a character who was in a gore anime but the model of the character has rules like..... YOU NO USE THIS FOR BLOOD OR GORE OR I SHOOOTS YOU !

and acting like that does not make me want to use the model when i see that i'm like "yeah i'm going to see what THIS model maker is doing ......"

These models are FREE, and they take days to make and a lot of real skill and effort. So my attitude is that if they want to put 'reasonable' use restrictions on them, such as no violence or porn (which is pretty standard anyway) I have no problems with it.

it's all personal preferance

and i'm reading your one journal about porn and such and as a woman i have to say it is an interesting read and it is true on the fact women can be just as perverted as some men

and i actualy do think there should be more magical boy and male shows transformation scenes and all because just as a male can enjoy a females form i as can other women enjoy the beauty in the male body

and i do see the problem of the younger anime characters being sexulized .....considering i like fully mature men i would expect others to enjoy fully mature women in there shows

Personally, I don't agree with and actually frown on the Japanese male (and hence, anime industry) obsession with high school aged girls. Mature women, as in any woman of at least 19 years of age and preferably 21 years and older, beats the socks off of high school girls in terms of sexiness and sexual savvy any day. Frankly, most high school girls in real life are just plain annoying.

I partly agree, people shouldn't make impossible conditions that have nothing to do with the work itself, but "we" (the downloaders) have to accept that it's their work, they make the rules. (I'm talking about self-made models of course)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TrackdancerTrackdancer In reply to Wampa842 [2012-10-13 17:32:17 +0000 UTC]

Some rules make sense, content creators should be allowed some degree of protection for their works. I concur (in general) with the following 'rules':

- Do not redistribute
- Do not edit
- Do not claim as your own << this one especially. I've noted several 'stage' models by Japanese authors that are redistributed by others here on DA without their original readme.txt and absolutely no credit to the original modeler. Not only that, the uploader claims the work as their own (rips).
