MMD Background Mattes Tutorial — Description
Almost ever since people began performing on stages, there has been the use of backdrops to help set the scene. This is true even with cinema films, where the cost of creating a backdrop (also known as a matte) is often a fraction of the price of creating the "real thing" and sometimes this would be impossible anyway. With the advent of computers, the art of making mattes have become even more sophisticated.

Which is why this medium should not be overlooked in MMD. So here is a basic tutorial on how to create a simple matte, but the principles outlined can also serve as a basis for more complex scenes.
