"We were warned that a rebel truck was approaching our base. I quickly put on my vest, grabbed my machine gun, and took up a high position. When they arrived, I fired several bursts until I ran out of bullets."
— Testimony given by Corporal John "Rikers" Fortson, who was one of the soldiers who repelled an attack by the Shafir rebels with his M249 machine gun, killing 3 of the 5 rebels.
This attack occurred on the 27th day of the foreign occupation. A Hilux pickup truck with five rebels on board headed toward the Saint Vincent military base to launch an attack. The soldiers on the base were warned to take cover.
Among those soldiers was Fortson, who donned his vest, grabbed his machine gun, and positioned himself on high ground. There, he fired at the moving truck, killing three of the five rebels.
Meanwhile, the soldiers in the guard tower, Usamerican Specialist Victor "Goggles" Trautfield and Gallic sniper Auguste "Guste" Dumas, also fired at the truck, killing the remaining two rebels.
Fortson was later reprimanded for acting without orders, and for what he did being risky given how fast the rebels' truck was approaching the military base.
One of the most popular photos of the time was when Trautfield and Dumas posed in front of the truck with the bodies. Goggles was holding an M4 rifle with a grenade launcher and ACOG scope, captured by the rebels—one of the many weapons stolen after the Runal Desert ambush.
