Subversion — Description
I made an entire combiner team in the span of an evening. I’ve been on a bit of a roll creating characters lately. I thought I’d post them all on one page. Their combined form is called Subversion. It means to overthrow or the act of being overthrown. Their name is a cruel pun because of a certain story idea I created them for. Sometimes I wonder if all transformer names are just bad puns.

Top Left is Nightlatch. He’s the group tactician. Nightlatch used to be an enforcer back on Cybertron. He was a lonely and quiet bot growing up, so his worried parents adopted a young grounder who he quickly took under his wing as if they had been brothers all along. He taught his brother the enforcer code, although his little brother was a natural. He was indifferent at first about the war although his brother was passionate about the Autobot cause. His brother nearly died in a Decepticon attack on their outpost later in the war, and the only way to save him was by transplanting his spark and processor into a new frame. Nightlatch was stationed at a different outpost before the procedure was complete and never received the news that his brother survived the procedure. Devastated, he gave up his role as an enforcer although he still keeps his colors in honor of the memory of the brother he lost. He swore a vow of silence and refuses to speak, not wanting to ever speak again after losing his brother. His alt mode is an R66 Police helicopter.

Next off in the Top Middle, we have Lancer. He’s the token hothead of the group. He’s super defiant of authority and tends to be loud and boisterous. He’s the mech most likely to start a bar fight in the bunch. He’s famous for his grappling hooks and his open insubordination. He acts a bit like a typical jock or teenage boy, getting competitive about almost everything. He believes heavily in defending his honor and strength, although if you manage to beat him in a competition he tends to shut up. He really likes driving through the mud for some reason and doesn’t mind getting his tires dirty. His alt mode is a 1972 Chevy pickup truck.

Crucible is Top Right. He’s the team leader and medic. He calls the shots, forms the head of their combined form, and is like the dad of the group. He’s very strict about manners and he will call you out about putting your elbows on the table. He’s very smart and decisive, often making decisions for the entire group. Sometimes he feels like he’s carting around a case of caffeinated toddlers. He’s small but very strong willed, serving almost like a mentor to the combiner group. He’s very caring and passionate about his team, although often times he feels like through becoming part of a combiner he shared his spark with the village idiots. His alt mode is a 2009 Fornasari Buggy.

Then there’s Seaglass at the bottom left. He’s the team’s techie. This mech is more likely to socialize with a toaster at a party than an actual person, because he understands technology more. He is a slight technopath in fact and works wonders with broken equipment. When speaking, he often speaks in cryptic phrases referring to space or the stars interchanged with normal dialogue. Seaglass has a condition where he is missing the part of his processor responsible for causing aggression, so therefore he almost never fights back. He’s a real sweetheart when you get to know him, despite being a quirky and awkward dork. He carries around a mouse minicon who helps him with his engineering and mechanic business. His alt mode is an Aerocet Pontoon plane. I posted the digital piece I did of him even though I drew this picture first.

At bottom right, Last but not least, there’s Polter. Polter is a quiet bot who wears a mask over his faceplate, though no one knows why. He has a very haunting voice that sounds almost like a ghost on a breathing apparatus due to complications of his condition. He used to work at a weapons testing facility when something went wrong and the resulting explosion of energy caused him to lose his physical form. It was as if his body was phasing out of reality, and a few bots after the incident mistook him for a ghost. Medics were able to assist him in stabilizing his condition, and they found that if he concentrated hard enough his physical form would return. Becoming a part of the combiner team also greatly improved his condition. Polter can phase through solid objects and walk through walls and almost any material in his phased state, and he can even turn nearly invisible, but the more he phases, the harder it is for him to regain his physical form.
