Description
This Land Rover is one of only 15 Series III models acquired by Royal Mail in 1981, despite the availability of the Defender at that time. It entered service in August 1984 as a Mailvan Reserve at Huntly, bearing serial number 1100053. The initial Post Bus route from Huntly to Lumsden commenced in May 1977, utilizing a Hillman Avenger estate car. In October 1984 and January 1985, more demanding routes to Cabrach and Clatt were introduced, operated with converted Land Rover Mail vans. The Clatt route employed vehicle B887 JSS, now designated as Post Bus serial 1770011. In May 1987, this Land Rover was reassigned as the Huntly Dual-Purpose Reserve-R4 and subsequently served as the Aberdeen Workshop runabout. It was the final Series III Land Rover operated by Royal Mail and retained the white roof characteristic of all Scottish Post Buses during that period.
The vehicle was acquired directly from service in August 1993 for preservation and a comprehensive restoration, with an emphasis on authenticity and craftsmanship. The restoration process began by thoroughly assessing the vehicle’s structural and mechanical condition. As most major components remained original, the focus was on cleaning, refurbishing, and conserving where possible. The original engine, gearbox, and axles were carefully dismantled, inspected, and rebuilt using a combination of refurbished original parts and high-quality replacements sourced from specialist Land Rover suppliers and heritage part stockists. Where the hubs and differentials had been compromised by water ingress, all bearings and seals were replaced, and the internal components were cleaned and restored to operational standards.
A new galvanized chassis replaced the corroded original to ensure long-term durability while maintaining authenticity. Period-correct parabolic leaf springs, OEM specification mud flaps, and new seats matching the original pattern were installed. The wiring harness was replaced with a loom manufactured to original specifications. All replacement panels and trim components were sourced from reputable suppliers who specialize in Series III restoration, ensuring correct fit and finish. Throughout the process, great care was taken to preserve the distinctive features of the Post Bus, such as the white roof and internal fittings. Documentation and photographs of the restoration are available, illustrating each stage for enthusiasts interested in the details of its preservation.
