Why Kiribans don't work...

Description This image shows you why kiribans, simply do not work.

A kiriban is a contest set up by the owner of a webpage whereby the winner is the one who spots a particular instance of a statistic on the webpage, such as getting over 5000 views or over 68 comments. The number may be a metric milestone (such as 1, 10, 100, 10000), but can also be a pattern or lucky number (such as 1024 or 8888). The contest draws more traffic to the hosting webpage as people go to see if they will spot the statistic while it is at (or closest to) the target number.

The issue arises when programmers get involved... Why go to all the fuss of staring at a computer screen, stabbing your F5 key, hoping that some numbers will change for you, when, in under 50 lines of code, you can program an application which will do that, much faster, for days on end? Kiribans simply do not work because it's not even difficult to make your own software to get around them.

If you ARE going to run a kiriban, make sure the evidence is backed up by something other than a screenshot, or a copy of the page: both can be forged or just plain reiterated until the guy is guaranteed a win. Usage of a tracking service which you can place in your webcam image (or by using the newly implemented Google Analytics feature) in order to verify kiribans is most likely the best way to go.

That said, I still plan to enter, and win, every single one I see. Not by using this at all...

Thanks to for featuring in this demo and giving me the mediocre determination to go through with making this.

Now that  I'm in college and thus know more programming...

Is the refreshing done by a timer and stuff? I know the logo (if it was in C#) is done in a picturebox, the condition met might be with comparing strings, the raw HTML might be fetched from the page itself and stuff...
You REALLY have to explain this to me ouo

*sighes*

Yes, it's in VB.NET, because the point of the exercise was to make it as simple as possible.

Thanks for letting me know, though hardly anyone knows about this software and the coding behind it. Also i would be able to forge it using photoshop or MS paint so there isn't too much need to use this complicated software. I'll also plan to use the analytic and visitors feature at about 8800 watchers, and put them away later cause I don't want to be invading my visitor's privacy.

That's defeating the purpose of Kiribans... they're only there to be a fun thing for the artist and audience... its not super serious and uptight, just a fun thing to do... not meant to be a fighting and serious competition.. :l

I don't think you understand how much I want to win any challange I am posed... Lol.

Yeah, this was more of a PSA that the people running them need to watch out for stuff like this, using the methods in the description

Yea but a kiriban isn't meant to work like that, not meant to be a challenge to see who can break the system the best :T

I don't really mean to be angry at your or anything, its just, well, ruining. Ruins the purpose of a kiriban.  That's just my opinion, and if you really want Wern to draw you something I'd rather commission him for you than you ruin his kiriban...

Also worth mentioning NO People do not just stay on a page going "refresh refresh refresh", again, its a very lax thing that someone could be like " Sweet, I got it! "...
