"In 1955, the nationwide Kraft Television Theatre televised a program based on Serling's seventy-second script. To Serling, it was just another script, and he missed the first live broadcast. He and his wife hired a babysitter for the night and told her, "no one would call because we had just moved to town. And the phone just started ringing and didn't stop for years!"[6] The title of this episode was Patterns, and it soon changed his life.
Patterns dramatized the power struggle between a veteran corporate boss running out of ideas and energy and the bright, young executive being groomed to take his place. Instead of firing the loyal employee and risk tarnishing his own reputation, the boss enlists him into a campaign to push aside his competition.[18] Serling modeled the main[clarification needed] character on his former commander, Colonel Orin Haugen.[2]:37"

I think Serling resorted to fantastic themes and science fiction settings as a work-around strategy to circumvent the preemptive and apologist meddling of networks and sponsors leery of scathing and popular anti-war, socially-progressive and racially-provocative work-for-hire content he generated for live radio and television programs prior to 1959. He didn't, I think, resort to fables because the audience couldn't handle controversy, topical issues and grinding reality presented to a listening and viewing public that ate his stuff up with a spoon. He went ooga-booga in order to blow past The Money and The Establishment and ThePowersThatBeStupid.

Rod Serling was the Edgar Allen Poe of the 20th Century. Without intending to he invented the rerun ("Patterns" was the first show ever repeated upon audience request in television history). He was a man of exception conscience as well as exceptional talent. He wrote Planet of the Apes (1968) as well as every single episode of The Twilight Zone ('59-'64) and was a also a combat veteran and later a vocal anti-war activist who hated theVietnam War and Richard Nixon in particular.

He was definitely something else! I think they broke his heart with their meddling, stealing creative control and Night Gallery. The Velvet Alley (still available via Shout Company, I think), The Comedian, Requiem for a Heavyweight...asskicking television and far too few films.

My guess is that Rod might well have had a far greater output except that he was uncompromising as far as creative control. He could have produced more movies than Roger Corman if he didn't care about the quality of the content. Instead he had ironclad integrity and fought the suits tooth and nail...thus securing an astonishing legacy that still towers over the work of lesser men.

Adding only a consideration of the Irony Man Factor, in that I noticed in the first film that everything Tony built was, sooner or later, used against him, suit, paralyzer, arc-reactor and shrapnel-repulsor...just as Serling's rep as an uncompromising content creator, just as you've said, capable of switching from controversial topics to make-believe (and still make people think, Murrow-style, about monsters on Maple Street, for example) made him valuable, a proven "talent" whose low opinions of The Powers made him dangerous, Seven Days in May.

and died 28JUN1975. Gene Roddenberry was born 3 years earlier and died nearly 20 years later. "Rod" Roddenberry seems like a mighty fine choice. The media and methods of delivery vary (1946-2021) but the problems artists face seem to remain largely unchanged. "Funny" how that works.
David Milch "resorted" to the Japanese Z-Plan of just-in-time inventory to thwart censors and suits, writing big scenes in Deadwood and NYPD Blue, while shooting and reshooting, on the set, and citing his own neurological deficiencies as the reason NOT to submit completed scripts in the more conventional same-old, same-old. And spent years utterly defeating TPTB, but he also lost same valuable actors by adopting that surprisingly-successful tactic, because the guy who stepped into Hill Street Blues in season 3 and singlehandedly snagged a Peabody, nobody sneezed on, kinda everafter.
