Description INT. Car on highway

JACK, a man in his early twenties wearing a T-Shirt with a marijuana leaf symbol, scruffy and disheveled, drives down a forested back road in a beat up car.

There is no traffic except for him. The inside of his car is a mess, empty fast food wrappers and drinks line the flood and passenger seats, in his back seat we can see a partially open backpack with textbooks and disorganized papers clearly evident inside.

Jack bobs his head happily ambient techno as he eyes the road with only vague interest.

Jack brings a cigarette to his lips, breathes in, and holds it before breathing it out slow. Up ahead we can see a large white van driving down the road toward him.

As he glances toward it a clump of hot ashes from his cigarette fall onto his pants, he glances down for a moment and starts to brush them away with his free hand, when suddenly the van starts to veer from side to side.

Jack glances up just in time to see it careening toward him. He slams on the break and tries to turn away, but the van clips the cars hood and he spins out, slamming his head on the windshield as everything goes dark.

EXT. Highway

A hand holding a gun raps on Jack's car door window as he slowly comes too. Jack finally starts to awaken as he turns slowly to see a huge man in his forties wearing a yellow jumpsuit, gun in one hand, the other cuffed to a dead body, also in a yellow jumpsuit. The gunmen has a perpetual friendly grin. As Jack starts to freak out the gunman makes, a winding motion toward the window. Jack complies, bringing down the windows with one of the cars old fashioned crank system.

                                  Gunman

Hi! Sorry to be a bother but could you hand over your keys please?

The gunman speaks cheerfully with a light southern drawl, as if greeting a new neighbor in a stereotypical wholesome suburb. Jack sits there silently, eying the gun in terror. After a pause, the gunman looks concerned.

                                  Gunman

Hey son, are you okay? Looks like you took a hit to your head there.

Jack continues to stare up at the guy, eyes bulging with fear, but finally manages to come up with words.

                                   Jack

                          Please... don't shoot

The gunman laughs like he just heard a weird joke.

                                  Gunman

Well I certainly wasn't planning on it. Could you hand over your keys please?

Jack slowly removes the keys from the ignition and slowly starts to hand the keys over and the gunmen extends his cuffed hand, still connected to the body to get the keys. Jack sees the body and drops the keys in terror.

                                   Jack

                               Jesus Christ!

                                  Gunman

Whoops, a bit of a butter fingers aren't you!

The gunman replies with a laugh, bending over and taking the keys in his hand.

                                    Jack

                              Did you kill him?

The gunman glances down toward the man hanging from his handcuffs looking somewhat baffled, then back to Jack.

                                   Gunman

Steve? No, don't be silly. It was the crash that killed him.

                                    Jack

                                    Oh...

Jack doesn't seem convinced,as he eyes the Gunman as he comes up with the keys, he glances them over with a smile and then looks contemplative.

                                  Gunman

Seemed like a pretty swell guy too. Couldn't have had a                 more pleasant person to share a road trip with.

(The Gunman pauses and chuckles for a moment, shaking his head at a pleasant recollection)

I mean, what were the chances that I'd be paired off with a guy who also liked to build model trains?

Just as he finishes saying this he shoots of the cuffs nonchalantly, disconnecting himself from the body. Jack nearly jumps out of his skin with a short shout. The Gunman doesn't seem to notice, flexing his wrist happily.

                                   Gunman

Golly, you can't imagine how much of a load off that is. Not like he was that big a guy, but still, all that dragging was starting to be a real bother.

As he is speaking the Gunman gets into the backseat and hands over the keys to Jack, gun still in hand. He starts to lean forward to hand Jack the keys when suddenly he stops himself and leans back with amused embarrassment.

                                   Gunman

Well isn't this just rude of me. Where are my manners! I didn't get your name!

                                   Jack

                              It's... It's Jack.

                                  Gunman

Well a pleasure to meet you Jack. I'm Chris, I'd shake your hand but I'm afraid I have to hold you at gunpoint. You understand. Oh, and here are your keys.

Chris leans forward and hands the keys to Jack who takes them with a shaky hand. He holds them for a moment not knowing what to do, Chris waits patiently for a moment then glances up toward Jack.

                                   Chris

Well come on Son, start the car and drive.

Jack complies, bringing the car to a stuttering start, moving down the road. Chris glances at the books in Jacks back seat.

                                   Chris

So tell me about yourself Jack, what is it you do? You a student?

                                   Jack

                                Ye... yes-

                                  Chris

                               Highschool?

                                  Jack

                          Uh... uh-No. College.

Chris grins.

                                  Chris

Well ain't that just a great thing right there, a young man pursuing an education, making himself a future. I like that Jack, very forward thinking of you. What is it that you study?

                                   Jack

Uh... I am a business major.

                                   Chris

Huh, didn't really peg you for the business type. Not to be rude but I'd think a future business man would be a touch more tighty, you know, if you don't mind me saying. But hey, you probably know more about this sort of thing then me.

                                   Jack

Uh... I dunno...I- I guess I could be more neat.

As Jack starts to talk Chris starts to go through Jacks bags.

                                   Chris

Well don't worry yourself on it too much son, after all, there are more important things in life then just neatness.

Chris finds a bag filled with clothes, pulling out a shirt

                                   Chris

You mind if I borrow some of your clothes Jack?

Jack nods in agreement.

                                   Chris

Thank you Jack, I appreciate the help.

There is a pause as Chris Dresses himself in Jack's clothes, none quite fitting right.

                                    Jack

Look... Chris... I... I am not gonna tell anyone about you... Can't you just let me go?

                                    Chris

Well I'd really like to do that Jack. But I am afraid I have to hold you for leverage in case there's trouble. I understand it's an inconvenience for you. But don't you worry, once we're out of the state I'll let you go and I'll just hoof it from there.

Jack swallows hard.

                                     Jack

                                 Okay... Okay...

There is a long pause as Chris continues to dress in Jack's clothes.

                                     Jack

So the crash? Was that you?

                                     Chris

Yep. Had to shoot the driver. The old coot just wouldn't stop the van no matter how nice I asked him. Real pity.

                                     Jack

                               (under his breath)

                                  Jesus Christ.

                                     Chris

You really need to stop taking the lords name in vain, Jack. It's simply not polite.

                                     Jack

                           I'm Sorry- I'm... I'm sorry.

                                     Chris

You know, Jack, I feel like you're really painting me all wrong here, getting the complete wrong impression. Look, just cus I killed some people doesn't mean I enjoy it, and it doesn't mean I am going to kill you. I mean, it's not like this is a habitual thing or something like that.

                                      Jack

No-No, I wasn't saying-, you misunderstand, I-

                                      Chris

Ah no reason to fret Jack, I understand where you're coming from. It's scary being held hostage, I get it. Still, I hope you understand if I am a touch hurt. It's just mighty presumptious of you is all.

                                       Jack

                        I'm, I'm sorry, I didn't mean-

                                       Chris

Now Jack, you shouldn't apologise if you don't mean it. It's not a stand up thing for a man to do.

                                       Jack

                                    I'm sorry.

                                      Chris

                            It's quite all right son.

There is a cavernous pause as the two watch the scenery together. Though it doesn't last long.

                                      Chris

So you got a girlfriend Jack?
