Thank you very much for making this tutorial! I don't understand what's going on from 1 to 2. You change a lot the shapes on the left side of the picture, I would say that rotated L shape gets lost. What do you mean by "mantaining the major shapes" then? Besides, at what moment you decide the key light direction?

Not a problem
This tutorial is about the graphical design in painting, the lighting is established at the start so we can separate the Light and Dark in graphical shapes.
We can always adjust things here and there while we paint, there is no one perfect process for painting so.....
In step 1, the shapes are big and simple, then I started adding some smaller detailed shapes in step 2.Β "maintaining major shapes" means the bigger shapes are still visible and can be adjusted slightly for more interest.
I hope this makes sense.
