Here's a tutorial how i draw portrait with soft painting. I hope this is helpful to someone.

1. Sketch.
2. Flats. Put the flat color on the beneath the sketch layer.
3. Basic Shading. Add some shadows/lights to define value. Use the airbrush tool for soft painting over the top flat color.
4. Base color. Use base colors and change mode to overlay by over the top shading.
5. Rendering. Start adding the shadows/lights for more details, merge the layers and start blending and rendering. If you want the image to make it more vibrant, use overlay with airbrush to add touches, such as highlights.
6. Final touches. Add for more details.
