Description Silence crept over the base with nightfall. Piper had been sent outside to guard along with Kanaya for the night. So far The Wolves had claimed very few lives, but they were aware it would not last long. The two stood against the steel doors without speaking. All of the city was in ruin by now. Who knew about the rest of the world? They could easily be the only hope for humanity. As many people as could be saved were brought into the base. It was a fort some obsessive man had built against the zombie apocolypse if the need ever arose. There were daily censuses to see if the numbers had decreased. The Wolves were a sneaky race and could kill without making a sound. They had to be sure that their walls were providing optimum safety for all of them. Time was running out for them. Surviving did not seem worth all of this effort.

Karkat gritted his teeth, staring at the numbers. There were too many lives at stake right now. It was not as if he really cared all that much for the stupid humans but his own race was at risk. He could not allow them a fate like this. Meanwhile, a team was being decided on to go out and gather more supplies for food. They were in growing need of more. Starvation was another great issue they were going to face while dealing with this. Josephine was helping with choosing members for the team, but it appeared that there was a problem in the decision making. During the discussion on who would go on the search, Terezi brought up that they did not have any sort of medicines on the premise. The others had agreed that this was a problem. Now they were in need of two fairly large teams to gather all needed supplies. The number that they decided on was ten per team. All members had to be over the age of eighteen to participate. That rule did include the Kids and Trolls. They were required to stay in the base and manage all that needed done there. A list of eligible participants was created and chosen from. Weapons were all over the fort but they weren't sure if they would be effective against their enemies. The discussion was still going on when alarms went off everywhere. Screams of horror erupted through the crowd. Piper burst through the door, pulling what looked to be a dead or unconscious Kanaya behind her. Everyone went totally silent. Rushed footsteps were heard moments after. Her terrified friends gathered around her.
"iS SHE ALIVE?"Tavros murmured gingerly, breaking that terrible silence.
"No. She's not."Rose answered. Her voice cracked and she broke into tears. Jade drew her into a hug. She attempted to console her, but she was fighting her own breakdown.
"C4NT W3 R3V1V3 H3R?"Terezi asked. She sounded hopeful. Breaking those hopes would be hard...
"No, we can't. The Wolvesss dessstroy all life that exisssted. Ssso that means dream and physssical."She replied, looking at the ground sadly.
Josephine's eyes glistened red. There was visible growing tension in her body. Her lips curled back into a snarl."How dare theY..."
"Joey."Piper's tone was stern. She brushed away her tears and made sure that she was understanding that they couldn't attack them.
"They killed heR..."She hissed, completely ignoring common sense.
"We can't do anything about it! Ssshe wouldn't want usss be be ssstupid!"She continued.
The fury was starting to drive her mad. She shoved through the shocked crowd and stood at the doorway.
"DON'T GO OUT THERE."Karkat warned."YOU'RE GOING TO DIE."
"I don't carE!"Joey growled, fumbling with the lock.
"Well I do! Getting yourssself killed isssn't going to do usss any favorsss!"Piper attempted to convince her again.
"2hes right. youre not going two help anyone by dyiing."Sollux agreed. He was masking all emotions on the subject. Obviously the greater good of both species was more apparent to him than the immediate loss.
"LISTEN TO US. WE'RE TRYING TO HELP YOU."He was not sure if any of this was registering in her mind or not.
":33< please dont do this joey!"Nepeta squealed.
Josephine slumped her shoulders and starting sobbing, much like Rose.
"cAlM dOwn."Gamzee attempted to get her a bit more emotionally stable, but failed to do so. She would not even listen to him. There was obvious trauma setting in. Her mental health was something they had strived to keep at a normal level. She may have to be locked in one of the cells that lined the tunnels if this did not improve.
"Alright then. Vrissska and Eridan, I want you to prepare a proper ssservice for her. It will be conducted tonight. In the meantime, we have to figure thisss out or we're all going to sssuffer the sssame fate."Piper announced, taking charge. Josephine was usually the one who dealt with the survival department, whereas Piper was offensive maneuvers, but she evidently could not handle it right now. She cast a sad glance at her best friend. Gamzee was on the floor holding her like she was a little girl and she was just crying her eyes out.
Was this life now? Hiding away from the enemy rather than facing them?
A loud knock on the door caused everyone to look up. Karkat cautiously approached the door. He slid open the window and stared through it. He motioned for Piper to join him. A short debate brought about the decision that they were going to let this person in. They had several people gather artillery and stand near just in case they were the enemy. He undid the lock and let them in. The person stepped through quietly. She waved, then took out a pen and paper. After a few seconds, she handed it to Karkat, allowing him to read her message.
'my name is taylor king. i am mute and can not speak to you. i am on your side, do not be alarmed.'He read out loud so everyone could hear what she had to tell them."ALRIGHT. BUT YOU WILL BE KEPT UNDER CLOSE WATCH. NEPETA, YOU WILL BECOME HER VOICE. YOU'RE IN CHARGE OF WATCHING HER NOW."
":33< okay! hi taylor! im nepeta!"She greeted. Her words dripped with enthusiasm.
The brown haired girl nodded and smiled at her. She stuck out her hand towards Karkat.
He stared at her, oblivious.
"I think ssshe wantsss her paper back."Piper whispered.
"OH. I KNEW THAT."He handed it to her and then looked at the crowd."WELL? GO ON WITH YOUR LIVES!"
They dissipated immediately, leaving the leaders to converse with their newest addition.
Josephine finally calmed herself and greeted Taylor."You will be appreciated greatlY. Make yourself welcomE."
":33< she said thank you."Nepeta declared, glancing at what her companion had written.
"ANYWAY, I THINK WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT OUR TEAMS. WE LOST FOCUS."
They figured out their plans. Everything had calmed down by now and they were able to hold a service without any problems. Up until the very end, that is. Someone's shrill scream interrupted the moment of silence.
"HELP ME!"They pleaded.
"Where's that coming from?"Piper shouted, panicking.
"ii dont know!"Sollux seemed equally concerned. They did not have time for a headcount. Action had to be taken immediately.
"oH mY gOg."
They had all the Kids there. All the Trolls... that group seemed intact.
"What?"Piper turned to Gamzee, fear in her tone.
"wHeRe iS jOsEpHiNe?"
"That wasssn't her ssscream..."She speculated.
"Don't worry about her!"Rose threw her hands in the air."Worry about the person she just killed!"
"how dare you accuse her of such a thing!"Jade frowned. She refused to believe she had that sort of potential.
"shes fuvked up but i dont know if shed kill."Dave gave his input.
"LET'S STOP STANDING HERE! WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING! PEOPLE ARE PANICKING AND IF WE'RE UNDER ANY FORM OF ATTACK WE HAVE TO PREPARE!"Karkat reminded them.
"Right."
"Let'sss do thisss."
"i hope shes okay..."John mumbled, hanging his head.
"SOMEONE PLEASE!"The person screamed again.
This was going to end badly for someone. No one knew who it would be, but someone else was going to die because of this.
