I really don’t remember how it happened but in the middle of all the chaos, I think Farrah had an epiphany. This time she was the one who grabbed me and dragged me through it all. Everything kind of became foggy at that point. Maybe it was anxiety kicking in because it was all just a blur around me. After we became surrounded I just kind of zoned out and expected to die. With all that had happened, all that had gone wrong on this Op paling in comparison to every Op before, I just...broke... again I think. I remember seeing flashes of the infected swarming all over, the hulking one knocking aside the smaller ones to get to us. I saw the first tram leave with the Innies inside. I'm sure they weren't going to stick around and watch us die. But the one thing I didn’t see was what happened to Mikaelis or the other ODST. When Farrah dragged me inside the other tram and began messing with the controls, I assumed they didn’t make it. With all the creatures swarming around like a sea of dead people, I didn't see how they could have survived.
I felt like walls were closing in around me and I got an overwhelming sense of dread. Not that I didn’t have that before-I want to be clear when I said I was wigging out the entire time we were inside that godforsaken place. It really fucked me up and I’ll let you know the first thing I did was go see Dr. Atwell and had a nice long conversation with her. I still wonder if that violated some military protocol considering it was an ONI facility but I’m still alive to write these so I guess I haven’t made it onto a blacklist just yet. Getting back to the point, I didn’t really come back to reality until we made it to the secondary bunker location and the tram had stopped. The next thing I can clearly remember seeing was Farrah’s face through her visor as she tried to snap me back to reality. She was repeatedly telling me we needed to go before the Innies stole whatever vehicles were there. Finally I came to and acknowledged her orders, then we both made our way to the surface.
Struggling to keep my focus, I followed Farrah's lead down the corridor and up a flight of concrete stairs where we found ourselves beholding daylight once again. I can’t believe I’d taken it for granted before that day but I sure won’t ever again. Despite the dread, seeing the sun again somehow gave me hope. But...as usual, we didn’t have much of a moment’s respite. The Insurrectionists were just across us at the vehicle depot attempting to steal the last vehicle left-a Falcon. Both of us quickly took cover and began firing back at them. They didn’t have much cover at all in the open space of the depot considering it was above ground. The only person who did was in the pilot’s seat but clearly none of them were flight trained. Farrah popped one last smoke grenade to give us some cover and in a last ditch effort to get out of there with our lives, we rushed and flanked them. By some miracle the plan worked and we made it to the far side of the falcon where we ambushed the bastards and killed them on site. The pilot looked terrified of us knowing all his buddies were dead but lucky for us he didn’t know just how fucked up we were.
At that point we didn’t even have the energy to kill the last guy. Farrah just yanked him out of the cockpit and kicked him in the gut before she climbed in and began the preflight sequence. He gave me a dirty look and I thought about killing him right then and there for all the trouble they’d have caused. If they hadn’t assaulted the ONI facility then Sandover wouldn’t be dead. Vega wouldn’t be dead. And we wouldn’t have gone through literal hell just to stay alive. Even though I was so close to pulling that trigger...I just didn’t. With a sigh I just let him go and with Farrah calling back at me to get moving I quickly ran back to the troop bay of the falcon and strapped myself in. Not before grabbing that rucksack and kicking the bodies out though and upon opening the sack I found that damned black box; at least we’d have gone through hell for something.
