Farrah and I gave each other some concerned looks and we didn't have to see each other's faces to know what the other was feeling. Spend enough time around your buckethead brothers and sisters and you learn to read them like a book. I could tell she was uneasy about the sheer amount of blood on the wall and so was I. Unless the Insurrectionists enlisted psychopathic serial killers now there was no explanation for the severed arm and Farrah had to call it in. Sandover immediately made her way to us to inspect the scene but she didn't come to any new revelation that we couldn't. Sure, we'd all seen some gruesome shit while fighting Covenant but to think Insurrectionists cut off a fellow human's arm was just a bit much. We call them savages to rag on them but I don't think we'd ever expected this.

From here, Sandover kept the squad together for now as we moved farther inward to wherever this lab was. She tried contacting Command to report what we’d found and to get further orders. Unfortunately the line was mostly static due to being so far underground but the snippets we did get didn’t bode well. It seemed the Heart of Valor was meeting resistance from the Covenant and couldn’t buy us as much time as originally planned. Needless to say, the Sergeant wasn’t happy with the timetable we found ourselves on. None of us knew what a containment lab would be doing here and the bloody scene in front of us was concerning, but it was just another room to search for our objective at this point. Reluctantly we all moved on to find that the next few rooms were empty too but eventually we came across one with some weird artifacts that none of us recognized. They looked alien but not Covenant in design. It was puzzling for sure but the small room with its glass-contained items didn't put us any closer to finding the black box or any survivors. After leaving that room behind we finally made it to the lab that piqued the curiosity-and concern-of the four of us.

Inside the first section of the room was a secured viewing area with dozens of medical and technical monitors but they were all running on backup power so we couldn't gain much information from them. Blood was splattered across the workstations and most of the glass; some of it looked like it came from bullet wounds but this mirrored the scene back down the corridor. More importantly, beyond the blood-smeared glass panels was something even more concerning. Motionless and strapped to a table in the middle of an empty room was a mangled corpse with all manner of grotesque growths and scar tissue. I remember almost throwing up in my mouth and Vega made some grim, snarky comment as usual. Sandover wasn't having any of it. She snapped at him to shut up, likely under pressure from the timetable we found ourselves on.

Farrah took a few long moments to stare at the grim sight before us. We had no idea what we were looking at and I think it got to her somehow. She didn't speak a word but her being frozen in place didn't do any favors for Sandover's patience. The Sergeant snapped at Farrah too, something none of us had seen before. My senses screamed to get the fuck out of this place and I'm sure Vega and Farrah felt the same. It seems all of us were frozen. After barking orders at us to stay on mission at all costs, we reluctantly made our way back to the corridor and continued down it. Did we have any private thoughts to go awol and get the fuck out of there? Perhaps. But as we moved further into the darkness, still reeling in disgust and fear, none of us said a word. Not a word.
