This piece is excellent composition-wise. It draws the focus immediately to the die, without subtracting from the rest of the piece. Interesting tribute to the series Death Note, really; very abstract, yet not. I immediately thought of Near's obsession with dice. Howevver that's not the only reference to Death Note in this picture Even the color scheme itself brings to mind the Death Note series, the way I see it. It's dark, with high contrast, but the cool tones make it as thoughtful as it is dark and dreary, instead of merely dark or even frightening. This is a piece that most fans of Death note would think to do.

And you are pretty much spot on.
Some say the reference is weak, but for those who really like the series, they will remember how the scene with all the falling dices represent the biggest turn in the series.
The light represent Nears ideas slowly crushing the darkness.

To be honest, I thought first of Einstein's "God does not play dice with the universe" quotation, and didn't think of Near at all until I read the comments, but that could just be because I avoid the second arc whenever possible. XD In any case, it's a beautiful photo, and it links back to Death Note in more ways than just those two.

nice job! it inspired me to try my hand with a d20. Would have been better if my d20 was clear, or if I had a real macro lens, besides the basic Canon 18-55 on a 30D.

When you said there was a reference, the first thing I noticed is, if you unfocus your eyes, the dots on the die look like a caligraphy "L". ^^
