ah, either way--I'm jealous. I don't have downloadable brush access on my program, just what it gives me, and what it gives me sucks. lol.

Awe thats not fun at all... I use gimp, which is a free program and there are so many brushes that people have made here on DA I highly suggest Gimp.

hrm, I might have to try it...if at least just for the brushes, lol.
I have PSP9, but I don't understand ANY of it, and can produce alright stuff as-is with my current program (Digital Image Pro 9), but it's also not made to do half the crazy stuff I put it through

Wow. This is just...wow. Me and my pittly{is this even a word? xD}, manipulations couldn't come close! Still, I absolutely adore it. To me, since the horse is scarred, it shows that he, or she, regrets choices, or things that happened to it, even though it might not have had any control over the abuse. Then, as you said, it seems to show hope. Hope for a better tommorow. Also, the words from Martina McBride's song, Concrete Angel come to mind, partly because of the birdm giving the horse 'wings to fly to a place where she's loved':
"...bearing the burden of a secret storm,
sometimes she wishes she was never born.
Through the wind and the rain,
she stands hard a stone,
in a world, that she can't rise above.
but her dreams, give her wings,
and she flies to a place, where she's loved...
Concrete Angel..."
