Description
"Will you wake the fuck up all ready?" I heard some say before I was dropped into freezing cold water. As I flailed and spluttered, trying to find the surface of the water before I drowned I heard an insane cackle coming from somewhere nearby. When I finally found the surface I saw a pair of crystal blue eyes mocking me, but of course I would see those eyes laughing at me, he always did stuff like this.
"Why can I never sleep safely when you're around Jimmy? You're fucking crazy, ya know that?" I laughed, running my hands through my dripping wet hair.
"More than you know, man; more than you know." Jimmy smiled sadly.
I awoke with a jolt in a cold sweat. This had once been a happy memory I shared with one of my best friends. Now, it's only a haunting dream that seems to have a secret meaning that I still don't understand. I looked at the clock sitting on my nightstand, 4:00AM burned into my eyes as I ran my hands over my wooly head, noting I needed to shave again. Time to get up and do something or I'll drive myself crazy thinking about nightmares of the past.
After showering and putting on some shorts and a shirt I was out the door. There was no point in taking a phone with me, all of my friends were gone, and shoes have always been useless to me. I wandered the streets of Huntington Beach feeling like there wasn't a place for me in life any more. Something was wrong everywhere I went; a good memory gone bad, someone missing from where they belong, a dark turn to a once happy life. My world was unhappy. Hours later I found myself sitting on a piece of driftwood, staring blankly at the ocean, not thinking, just looking.
"I need your help. I have to get in and I don't know where to start." I sighed, talking to Val.
"Why did you even call me? I can't make you crazy Matthew, you're perfectly sane." She snapped, "Look, I'm sorry Jimmy died, don't forget that he was my best friend too, and I'm sorry that the rest of the guys are fucking nuts, but last I checked you're normal, if not a bit obsessed with this place…whatever it's called."
"Nightmare, the place is called Nightmare; and they're 'fucking nuts' they're just having a hard time without Jim and so am I. I'm not obsessed with anything at all! Why do you hate me so much now that Jim is gone? Is it 'cause I'm crazy? Am I too intense for you now? Oh, I fucking know what it is you 'can't handle me' alone." I screamed throwing my phone at the wall and watching the screen smash before it lodged in the wall.
I walked back out on the beach and threw myself down in the sand. I had to get out of here and get back to my band. The boys needed me and to be entirely honest, I needed them as well. I was suddenly exhausted and had no want to return to an empty house so I decided a beach night wouldn't be so bad. I curled up behind my driftwood couch and nestled into my hoodie to get a little rest.
I woke up standing in front of a rusted, almost broken, wrought iron gate with a colossal, Gothic style building standing behind it. I had an overwhelming feeling I had wound up somewhere terrible and there was no way back to my cozy beach bed. There were no signs within sight to tell me where I was and no people to tell me how I got here. It was virtually silent except for the faint sound of screams coming from the building in the distance.
