Circe — Description

Wonder Woman has perhaps the most gloriously bonkers rogues gallery in comics. Doctor Cyber, Doctor Poison, Doctor Psycho, Silver Swan, the Blue Snowman -
Mouse-man knows, Diana's enemies sound a little more colourful than the rogues of Metropolis or Gotham - but for all that colourful nonsense, Circe has always felt like the one who belongs at the very top of the pile.
Based loosely on the sorceress of Homer's Odyssey, she is ancient, immensely powerful and utterly contemptuous of mankind, possessing mastery over magic, transformation, illusion, teleportation and the sort of reality-bending sorcery
that makes it seem like punching her is a rather inadequate solution to the problem. Her favourite trick, naturally, is transforming people into animals, because - well - y'gotta stay on brand. hahah
What makes her relationship with Diana so compelling is that Circe isn't merely another villain who wants to conquer the world.
She represents almost everything Diana's philosophy rejects: domination rather than cooperation, vengeance and selfish power rather than communal strength.
Circe sees humanity as weak, hypocritical and beneath her, whereas Diana - despite having every reason to think otherwise - continues to believe mankind is capable of becoming better.
Their conflict therefore feels almost mythological in the truest sense: the immortal sorceress versus the Amazon champion, two powerful women embodying radically different ideas of what strength is for.
And yet, I rather like the idea that somewhere beneath all the murderous scheming there exists the faintest, most warped sense of sisterhood.
Circe and Diana are both women who have stood apart from ordinary humanity, both possess powers that place them above most mortals, and have survived centuries of conflict.
Circe could, in another life (a more Absolute one you might say) have been an ally - or perhaps the older sister who takes enormous offence when anyone else is allowed to torment Diana.
That possibility is what makes Circe more interesting than simply being a wicked witch with a grudge.
She has existed as a villain in her own right, an immortal schemer with ambitions, history and mythology independent of the Amazon princess, yet her best stories inevitably bring her back into Diana's orbit.
She is temptation, and the seductive promise of abandoning compassion altogether.
Diana's answer is always the same: strength without cruelty, never surrendering the principles that make her a hero - and love above all else.
for Circe, mankind is simply the clay through which she will remake the world to her liking.
