Starfleet Headquarters
Office of Vice Admiral Christopher Pike
Admiral Christopher Pike gave a reassuring smile to the young man across from him.
"Well, Jim, are you ready to head back out?"
James Tiberius Kirk nodded and took a deep breath. "Yes, Admiral. I am."
Pike looked down at his PADD. "The first ship on the list is the USS Triumph, our newest Constitution class." He tapped a control and a holgram appeared of the ship. "She's scheduled to launch in three months."
At the words 'Constitution class', Kirk had flinched slightly and while Pike talked, his expression had steadily darkened. "I'm going to have to decline, Admiral,” he said quietly but firmly. "I don't want anything like my former posting. Anything even remotely resembling her is out of the question."
He took a deep breath. "I need a fresh start. A clean slate . That means no Constitution class ship
and preferably not a large one either."
Leaning forward and looking into his mentor's eyes he continued. "Two good things came out of what happened to me. Number one: I found out who my real friends were. Number two: I grew up. I don't need
to be in deep space to be happy and I don't need a big, fancy ship. As long as its a ship I'll be fine." He gave a mirthless smile. "Frankly, I'd be fine with a garbage scow."
Pike's expression was concerned but he nodded thoughtfully. "I'll see what I can do, Jim. And I'm sure we can arrange something other than a garbage scow."
