“Hey, hey, Evelyn!”

Eve turned from the window she was sitting in to glance over her shoulder as Lektra trotted up, a grin on her face. She returned it with a smile of her own.

“What’re you up to?” the green kit asked, propping herself into the window to look out herself. “Watchin’ for something?”

“Nah,” Eve responded, looking back through the glass. “I just like watching folk outside. They do all sorts of things. Lookit that kit there.”

The both looked down as a blue kit went sprinting across the plaza before slamming into another yellow kit, sending them both rolling. Lektra let out a boisterous laugh while Evelyn snorted.

“That happens more than you’d expect,” Eve mused, her eyes skimming around other folk who puttered around. She vaguely thought she could feel her tail gnawing on the windowsill.

“I should do that to Yarrow,” Lektra pondered out loud. “Like when he’s better. I think he’d find it funny.”

A frown crossed Evelyn’s face at the mention of Yarrow. “Yeah…” She stayed focused on the window, brow furrowing as she grew quiet. Lektra gave her a puzzled look.

“You uhhh… good?”

“Yeah, yeah. I just…” she glanced over at the green kit before hastily looking back out the window. “I just can’t believe…”

Evelyn’s ears perked up as she spotted a familiar figure making their way towards the den, leaving her sentence at a trail. Lektras puzzled look only grew more confused.

“Oh– OH!” The pink kit gave an uncharacteristic wiggle as she pushed her nose to the window. “Sorry Lektra, I gotta go— I gotta go do something!!”

She barely gave the other kit a chance to respond as she lept from the window before tearing towards the door to the plaza. An adult folk nearly tripped over her coming through the entryway as Evelyn barreled her way past, making a beeline for the dark figure that continued to approach. They stopped upon seeing Eve sprinting towards them before kneeling and opening their arms up.

“MOM!!” Evelyn shouted, throwing herself into the folks’ chest and burying her face into her robes and mane. “You’re back!!!!” She felt strong arms wrap her into a hug and she squeezed back as hard as she could. She felt her tail nosing at her mothers arm and she sent a silent threat to not even dare biting this particular folk.

“Hello my love,” her mother said softly, giving Evelyn another squeeze before pulling back to give her a good look over. “You grow so much while I’m gone, I can hardly keep up.” A clawed hand brushed through the kit’s hair and she leaned into the touch, unable to smile as much as her heart wanted to.

“Did you find anything cool this time?” Evelyn asked as her mom sat back, tilting her head to look at her child. “You were in the Forgotten District this time, weren’t you? Did everyone make it back okay? Oh– any monster… um, megafauna? Oh you didn’t get any more scars did you? I hate when you come back with…”

Her mother laughed loudly before cupping Evelyns face in her hands to meet her eyes with her own.

“You know what my time in the guild is like, what about you, goober? How has the den been treating you? How are your friends?” She paused, looking past her daughter momentarily before looking back. “An admirer perhaps?”

Evelyn gave her mother a confused look before glancing behind herself. She saw Lektra still in the window, watching the two of them curiously. Evelyn felt her face grow hot, abruptly turning back with her ears pulled back.

“T-that’s Lektra, she’s my friend!! I also know um, there’s Yarrow and Yu Hao and–”

Her mom laughed again, hands coming to a rest in her lap. Evelyn grew quiet herself, feeling her tail start to idly nibble at her ankle.

“They already sound wonderful and I want to hear everything about them. I’m back for a couple weeks, I thought perhaps you’d come home with me? If you’d like.”

“Yea– yes! I’d love that, especially if you’re going out again…?” She trailed off looking hopefully to her mother, secretly hoping she’d somehow say she’d quit the Adventurer’s Guild. She was met with a sympathetic smile, causing her heart to sink.

“You know I will be goober. But we shouldn’t dwell on that for now – how about you introduce me to your friend… Lektra, was it?”

“I’m Lektra, yeah!!” Evelyn heard her exclaim behind her, glancing over her shoulder at her friend, a smile creeping onto her face.

“Of course, Mom. Well, um, Lektra, this is… this is my Mom!”

Evelyn's mom spends a lot of her time in the Adventurer's Guild so when she's off exploring and working with the guild, Eve stays at the den. Eve's relatively quiet and reserved so she doesn't talk about it much unprompted but she looks up to and loves her mom a lot. And Lektra gets to meet her!
