Artist's Notes: So because I have 18 (I think) creatures prepared for Cryptid October I will be uploading more often, but more sporadically, than usual. This is why I've been uploading for 4 days in a row now. Anyway here is the mapinguari, which in modern times has been interpreted as a surviving ground sloth. In the original folk tales the mapinguari was a horrible monster with a singular eye, backwards feet, and a mouth in its torso, but more recent sightings of it outside of it seem to describe it as a ground sloth. Ground sloths are unusually common among cryptids in both North and South America and even survive into contemporary cryptozoology as the gorp from 4chan's paranormal board. If you're wondering why the anatomy seems a bit off, it's because I originally drew it as the mythological interpretation of the creature before deciding that the ground sloth look would be more appropriate for a list of cryptids and more "on brand" for my art.
