cool technique you can perform right now:
use ffmpeg to save a video as "raw video" with pixel format "yuv420p"
open video as "import raw data" in audacity (for best results use "unsigned 8-bit pcm")
apply distortion->hard clipping and then a lowpass (i use the filter curve tool)
then save it in the same format as a raw file (with no header)
then you can use ffplay/ffmpeg to play/convert the output, making sure to specify the exact same dimensions as the original image/video
