Castle Neuschwanstein - Side Elevation #1 — Description

Here are some images of the Castle Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, in Southern Germany.
While it certainly looks like a “fantasy castle” from a fairy tale, this structure is absolutely real. Initial excavation began in 1868, with the foundation stone being laid on September 5, 1869.
Completion of the interior decorations is noted as having taken place in 1884. There is no official “date of completion,” since the castle was technically never completed.
Interestingly, there were plans to build a chapel with a central tower on the upper courtyard, but that portion of the construction was never completed (or even really started.) King Ludwig II was found dead in 1886, and all plans for further construction were stopped at that time. The castle was opened to the public later in 1886.
While I did my best to capture the “essence” of Neuschwanstein, I confess this model falls a bit short of the actual castle in a number of ways. There is an “insane” level of minute architectural detail and artistic finery on this enormous castle. So while I have attempted to capture the “spirit” of the castle, I would never be able to fully capture all of its endless attention to detail, subtle finery, remarkable craftsmanship, and artistic splendor.
Among other things, my model lacks many of the more subtle architectural details, several painted murals, and statuary. Beyond this, there are subtle variations in the coloration of the stonework, and a countless other details which I didn’t even attempt to replicate.
Nevertheless, hopefully these images will capture the “spirit” of this inspirational structure, and might even help brighten your day. Enjoy!

P.S. I’ve always thought it would be fun to set a medieval fantasy role-playing game in this castle, but I’ve never actually gotten around to it. (At least not yet!) If I do, I will most certainly use these images as reference material for players, to help bring that location to life.
