Description
When I was cleaning up my files to put in storage, I found this which I forgot to post ages ago.
I used my Evoloons as examples, including one of my concept-characters (the fishy gal), but this is relevant for non-loons too of course.
This is more about the colours of a character, and not about the physical shape or look of a character.
Of course, this is all just my personal thoughts and you don't need to take any of it to heart. If it's helps that's awesome.

jeez thanks for this. i was always to lazy to put up a guide like this, and telling people directly why 100% saturated colors are bad choices and just as pure white and black nearly non-existant always earned me responses like those of a 5yo

I'd be too lazy now to make a guide but apparently wasn't whenever I decided to do this.

Neon and Bright colours are something I personally avoid. All the tips are just based on my takes on designing. There's never a specifically correct or incorrect way to design a character- as long as it's your own then it's amazing.
My eyes a very sensitive to bright and neon colours so I don't like them. And throughout my life as an artist, I mainly see neon colours used badly and with new artists (thus my view on them tends to be of a childish view). I've seen lots of beautiful uses of colour, even with Neons. It's just something I don't find appealing to use for myself.

it's weird seeing your characters used as examples since they're different from mine by a long shot. X'DD I personally don't like using pure white as it doesn't work well with adding highlights to a character with an all white color pallette (aphy was a huge example of this, so I often had to overlay colors or not shade at all.) I don't like pure white too since it's not natural and I prefer having a bit of a tone to it since it adds that little extra uniqueness even if drawing other characters with white on them. (example would be Alice, Jax, and Othello. They each are tinted with their respective color pallets) I have similar feelings about using pure black too as shading is impossible with it. I only have one character who has black in his pallette and it's only his hair and the fact that I don't use black for my linearts unless I'm sketching or don't feel like it lol. (Chose to keep it like that so I can mess with highlights easier and it just works for his design.)
Another note too, you can use brighter colors IF you know how to use them and not just make a mess lol Toffee would be an example of this, albeit a very complex one. I tend to like darker pallets with light contrast or more contrasting designs, usually using 3-5 colors ( minus rainbow markings or colors, hair, and eyes) and personally I don't like using gradients since they don't pop as much to me (and I color everything on one layer, so sometimes it can be a mess using the brush tool for blending gradients)
One thing too that I always use when creating a character too; Always make a design you're gonna remember or can draw from memory. I use this rule since in traditional art, references might not be available since one might be traveling with no access to the internet. The mind is one of the best storage units, so as long as you can remember what a character looks like, you can always have fun drawing. This also stems from my stubborn OCD, as I really don't like using references for my art unless I'm stuck or want to learn new things lol so with characters I draw often, I just keep their color pallets saved on the swatches in sai2 (as they infinitely expand, unlike sai1) so I don't have to break from my drawing focus to dig up a reference sheet from my files. (I used to copy/paste from DA too, but thanks to them switching servers n shit, the image quality is super bad and like a JPEG instead of PNG like I save all my pics. So thanks DA)
But ye, just my thoughts n preferences owo b

Oh yeah, we have HUGE differences in out character styles X,D
And I don't add highlights to characters normally, so of course I don't really need to worry about that with my white characters. I did still recommend not using pure white (and black). But I'm weak for it xD
"personally I don't like using gradients since they don't pop as much to me" And that's exactly why I like them lol! It's crazy how different our preferences are though.
