Technology File - UNTG-20 Bullfrog APC

Written by Kiev Yarkov,
UNTD Lab 1 Chief Scientist

Built by Hammerfest Heavy Engineering, the Norwegian made UNTG-20 Bullfrog is one of many weapons developed for Operation: Nexus Point. This multipurpose armored personnel carrier (APC) functions as UNITE's main form of ground troop transportation. At a staggering four meters in height, this this massive 8 wheel drive APC is one of the largest vehicles of its class and was built to plow through any obstacle in its path, and cross even the most hostile of terrain while safely transporting its compliment of forty soldiers into an engagement zone.

Aside from its size, the key feature of the Bullfrog is its survivability. Its armor is made up of layers of composite and spaced armor which allows the vehicle to shrug off all manner of attacks – from standard projectiles of militia, to energy bolts of a magical girl, and even the claws of a shadow beast, the Bullfrog is designed to break enemy lines while taking egregious amounts of abuse from any threats it may encounter.

The vehicle's main weapon is a twin barrel 76 mm auto cannon which is mounted a on a rotating arm at the rear of the vehicle. Designed for long range engagements, this arm 'turret' is capable of extending upwards when the vehicle is stationary to further increase its arc of fire in all directions. The turret's base component section is modular in design and can be swapped out for other weapons such as the larger 120 mm gun, guided missile launchers, and rocket pods. For support roles, that section can also mount a radar and sensor systems similar to the Mobile Sensor Array unit. Because of its size, the top of the Bullfrog is vulnerable to being mounted by enemy forces. To deal with this, the Bullfrog is equipped with a smaller 30 mm chain gun turret for mowing down anyone, or anything, foolish enough to go up against it. Additional armaments include of six grenade launchers sets, each housing up to five grenades and can be configured to fire either smoke or anti-personnel air-burst rounds.

The interior of the Bullfrog is can be broken up into three mains sections

Troop compartment - Taking up more than half of the Bullfrog's interior this section houses up to four squads of UNITE troopers. During night operations, the compartment switches to a low-light setting to preserve trooper's vision. Once the APC has reached its destination, the Bullfrog's 'mouth' disembarkation ramp lowers as bright spotlights above the ramp brighten the landing zone, dazzling enemies in the process. The Bullfrog has an interesting synergy with the UNTC-12 Pegasus aerial hauler in that the Pegasus can lift the entire vehicle, and its occupants, directly into battle as an alternative to using a troop transporter pod.

Driver's cabin - Located in a small section above the troop compartment, this area is where the Bullfrog's driver, commander, communications team, and two gunners operate from. The cabin can be accessed either via a hatch at the top of the vehicle, or by a secondary ladder from within the troop compartment.

Utility room - The mid to aft section of the Bullfrog is its multipurpose utility room. Depending of the mission, this room can be configured to serve as a command center or even as a medical bay. It's not uncommon for commanders to even retrofit their Bullfrogs to function as a mobile garages. It should be noted that the Bullfrog is a fully pressurized vehicle with sufficient life support systems and is equipped with chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection

The Bullfrogs role goes beyond simply transporting troops. As mentioned earlier, the vehicle can serve as operation's center for UNITE's field commanders and agents to convey orders and battlefield tactics to troops and Enforcers in the field. Despite its size the vehicle's engine compartment houses one of the largest diesel engines of its kind allowing the heavily armored APC to reach speeds of up to a 70 km/h (unladen).

In a hunter-killer role, the Bullfrog is more than capable of pursuing monsters and extradimensional beings across all kinds of environments. From swamps to woodlands, there is no terrain too difficult for the Bullfrog to overcome. Not even large bodies of water will stop this beast of a vehicle as its amphibious design means that it can be deployed from ships such as the Godwin-class battlecruiser.

Standard procedures in such a mission will be for several Bullfrogs to box in a pursuit target from all directions. Should a fight take place in an urban environment, the Bullfrog's immense size allows for commanders to use the vehicle as effective roadblocks. Strategic positioning of Bullfrogs along street and alleyways is an effective way of prevent targets from escaping a quarantine zone. Ironically despite its all-terrain nature, it is rather cumbersome when traversing in urban environments. At almost two and a half road lanes wide, it is ill suited for traveling on regular roads. There are also many stories of unwary Bullfrog drivers underestimating the size of their vehicles and getting stuck between buildings, often resulting in thousands of dollars in property damage.

Despite that, there is no question to the psychological aspect brought about by the Bullfrog's immense size. Its mere presence on the battlefield is known to aspire courage amongst troopers, and strike fear in the hearts of those going against it. Today the Bullfrog continues to be fielded in small but effective numbers and has seen use in many anti-shadow beast operations under various roles. Its multipurpose functions and variable armaments has made this vehicle quintessential for field commanders going up against any number of super powered beings.

As UNITE's objectives continue to evolve past shadow beast containment, to the capture and elimination of other mythical/extradimensional beings, the need for more exotic weaponry has become paramount. The Bullfrog is one such example, and has proven to be a worthy addition to our arsenal.

RETURN TO DATA HUB

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------

And with that, we have the final entry to conclude UNITE month(s)! Once again, I would have had this up sooner if not for some IRL obligation hogging away my already limited time. Rest assured this doesn't mean I'm done with data hub. I'll still be periodically updating it, so expect more units, characters, and entries in the future!

The main inspirations for this vehicles is the GDI amphibious armored personnel carrier , and (oddly enough) the All-Terrain Tactical Enforcer .
