Le Richesses de la Mer — Description

On the coast of mid Jurassic France approx. 166 million years ago, a Poekilopleuron bucklandii, a type of megalosaur, drags an unmatched bounty from the shallows; a dead plesiosaur (Cryptoclidus eurymerus) washed up by the tide.

Poekilopleuron, meaning ‘varied ribs’, was one of the first dinosaurs known to science, and one of the first found outside of England. Only known from fragmentary remains, which were also destroyed during World War II, little is known about this animal, other than it likely being a French relative of the British Megalosaurus. Shark teeth were found preserved in Poekilopleuron’s stomach region, suggesting it had a taste for seafood.
I originally drew the sketch for this around 5 years ago for a huge project that ultimately never reached completion. I drew many sketches for it but only ever finished a few of them, and this one was my favourite of those; I thought it was about time I did something with it. Maybe one day I’ll go back to it, or at least some of the sketches I did for it.
