Description

The common pangolin is a genus of ornithopod of unknown origin, “pangolins” refers to this unknown origin clade of ornithopods, but since pangolins are documented to live on Karia, it is unknown what they are called in karia’s context.

Description:

The common pangolin is a large ornithopod, knights (males) weigh 2 tons, stretch 26 feet long, and stand 10 feet tall in an upright stance, maidens (females) are smaller, weighing 1 ton max, stretch 20-23 feet, and and stand 8 feet tall in a upright stance. They are armored herbivores, with thick, hardened feathers compensating for the osteoderms they lack, a beaked head, and 3, sharp claws, attached to fingers flexible enough to manipulate vegetation.

Behavior and diet:

Like most ornithopods, the common pangolin are social herd animals, roaming aborias forests and jungles in herd of 10-20 individuals, which are usually adults, subadults, adolescents, juveniles, and hatchlings alike. They are folivores, primarily feeding on leaves, though their diet can extend to fruits and twigs. They are primarily qaudrupedal, walking on their knuckles to preserve their claws, it’s not uncommon to see them walk on their hind legs. They are extremely aggressive, likely beachside all their armor and bulk ways them down, forcing fight instead of flight. Like anteaters and potentially earths deinocheirus, the common pangolin issues its sharp claws fore defense, a single swipe can leave a mean indent on trees, which is how they mark their territory, but they can also leave deep lacerating gashes in the skin, it’s so serious that if the gashes reaches the throat, chest, neck, and anywhere near vitals, death is either inevitable, or likely. Its armored tail is also a form of additional defense.  During the mating season, males get aggressive, and their claws are used for something entirely different…..each other. Knights duel for a kingdom of maidens, which can result in severe wounds and or death. Females are not reserved from this violence either, as maidens fight for nesting spots in the aptly named nesting grounds in the nesting season.

Ecology:

Like most herbivores, the common pangolin provides a decent amount to the ecosystem, their dung fertilizes plants and soil alike, as well disperse whatever seeds that fail to digest in their digestive tract. Despite their armor and weapons, they have their predators, their necks, armpits, and German underbellies are vulnerable to bites and scratches, and their slowness, armor, and bulk makes them not very agile, and can easily be outmaneuvered. However, this is not a bad thing, because as stated pervious, the common pangolin has no problem with defending itself. All animals have their defense, for dryosaurus aboriensis, it’s the trees, for small elasmarians and small thescelosaurus its speed, and for the common pangolin? Nothing but bulk, brute force and raw strength.
