104 — Description

In the 1990s, I was really into Planescape, and one great reason I got into Planescape was because of all the great interior illustrations (ink-lines with watercolor-coloring) by Tony Diterlizzi. https://diterlizzi.com/

You probably guessed already that this particular six-armed pencil drawing was inspired by td's famous illustration of the marilith entry in the Planescape monster manual.

I was also really getting into using more photorealism in my artwork, so I asked a friend of mine to pose for me for a few minutes, followed by asking her to change the pose of her arms, followed by changing the pose of her arms again. (Yes, she was wearing normal clothes at the time. Yes, we both knew I'd have to draw quickly because of her muscles' lactic acid buildup from holding her arms out from her sides like that. Yes, the highest arms were the first arms drawn. LOL) Then I spent a looooong period of time drawing those scales.

(Come to think of it, I'll admit I was hitting on her for years, but in the end she married another guy. Oh, well. Still, of all my friends, she has possibly been the photorealistic model for more of my illustrations than anyone else, in part because of a shared interest in RPGs and drawing. She's no slouch when it comes to drawing her own illustrations, either.)

The mancatcher polearm she's carrying is a tribute to the repeated mention of those devices in the Planescape setting.

Considering how often this drawing comes up over the decades in conversations regarding D&D, visual arts, and friends who I met in college, I think the only reason I didn't have it in my DA gallery yet is because it was probably in my old gallery back on Elfwood back before Elfwood closed down.

This is one of my top 20 drawings of all time.
