Well the Rankin was originally started by a crazy Confederate Civil War veteran by the nam of Fred Rankin, better known as "Crazy Freddie". He got that name while serving on the Confederate side of the American Civil War, when he was in the head by a stray piece of copper plating from an exploded cannon at the Battle of the Bull Run. The events of the war, and possibly the concussion, earned him the title. But mining records say that Rankin did give his name to a horse, like you said. But of course, historical records say he was also married to that horse! Literally! Took it down to the Church and to the confusion of the Reverend who served as the wedding priest, they got married. Ever since then, it has been illegal for humans and horses to get hitched!

Maybe I should write a biography of Fred Rankin.
